ONLY GOD CAN
But no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil, full of deadly poison. (James 3:8)
It is only after we have attempted to control the tongue, that we begin to realize what an uncontrollable evil it is! When we become conscious of what we say, or what we almost say and the effect it can or does have on our lives it stirs us to look for help and the only one who can really help is God.
John 3:6 describes our tongue as a flame of fire that can destroy our life if we do not control it. The inverse of that would encourage us that we can improve our life with a tongue that is under control and speaking the truth.
Until we realize this, we go through life thinking our words are no big deal. The old saying about sticks and stones breaking our bones but words cannot hurt us is a lie and we know it. The fact is that we all know that other people’s words can hurt us; we just fail to realize that our own words can hurt us as well.
Even many Christians fail to realize the importance of their words. We know we should not lie or use the Lord’s name in vain but we do not think about the fact that saying things that disagree with God’s plan for our lives hurt us as well.
It is for this reason that we must draw closer and closer to God. We must know Him more so that we take on more and more of His nature. When He is in us, it is much easier to say the right things than the wrong things. We are no longer comfortable saying the wrong the things. We become more aware of what we are about to say and learn to correct it before it comes out or to just not say anything.
If we think about how much our words can make or break our lives in any given situation, we will desire to speak what God says about our lives. We will be more inclined to bless than to curse and look for good than for bad. We will stop cursing others and ourselves.
The Bible says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” We are the redeemed of the Lord and so that is what we should be speaking in and around our lives. We should be an encouragement to others who are redeemed and an example to those who are not yet redeemed.
Let’s not let our mouths destroy our witness. Rather, let’s make sure that what comes out of our mouths confirms and reveals the One who is in our hearts. Only God can enable us to do this and He will if we let Him.
