OOPS! MISSED IT
"Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water." (Numbers 20:8 NKJ)
Did God set Moses up for failure when He told him to take the rod along? No! I don’t think so. Actually, the people were use to seeing Moses with that rod. They expected everything to happen that way. Obviously, God had a different plan. I think He wanted the people to see a transition here; a new aspect of His personality so to speak. But unfortunately, Moses missed it. As a result, Moses got to see the Promised Land from a distance, but never got to enter it.
We know that there came a time when Jesus taught on speaking to a mountain in order to move it. Here God asked Moses to speak to the rock. God said that this was the way that He wanted the people to receive the water this time. I believe God wanted to show them that He would respond to their words and that everything did not require the wrath or the rod of God. God wanted them to see a picture of His love. They could speak and He would speak. They would speak and He would respond. They would be His people and He would be their God. They would be His children and He would be their father.
God still met their need, but the cost was great. Moses died along with all of that generation in the wilderness. I believe that Moses understood and was at peace with it before he was gathered up by God, but the people missed that revelation of God and His desire to commune with them without the fire and the shaking and all the fear. They could have developed a whole new understanding of respect for God because of His love for them rather than just the trembling fear of Him.
And so, here we are. We can learn to speak what God says and expect God to respond because we know that He loves us. We can be confident in His plans for us and trust Him in every circumstance. We can carry on as Joshua did, saying what God said to say and doing what God said to do. When God told Joshua to have the Ark bearers stand in the water, that is what Joshua did. No need to slap the water! When God told Joshua to have the people march around Jericho silently, that is what Joshua did. There are many more examples of God saying and Joshua doing and God acting accordingly.
What is God saying to you? Have you missed it? We all have, no doubt! Fortunately, even though we may have missed it, we do not need to quit and die on the mountain. We can recover through the Grace of God and the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ and still experience the Kingdom of God in a way that only God can reveal it.
Let’s move into the Promised Land and explore every part as God opens new and wonderful doors.
