OUR GREATEST NEED

Do you want to be made well? (John 5:6 NKJ)

If someone walked up to you and asked you for a list of your needs and told you that they would meet every single need on your list, what would your list look like? What would be the first thing that you would write down? Since this is a devotional writing, you are probably thinking that the top of the list should have God on it! We are not looking right now for a religious answer, but rather a heart answer. We have to be honest with ourselves about what is in our hearts.

As for me, I know what I would write, but I want to make sure that what my life reveals is the same as what I write. I have become increasingly aware of my desperate need for God recently. At the same time, He has made me aware that the more that I realize my need for Him the more I will experience His presence. Naturally, we all understand that His presence is where our wellness lies. He alone can make us whole.

The thing that messes with us all is that we tend to get our focus on other things and see them as what will best fulfill our needs. That is why our list may be full of things that are really just byproducts of all that the presence of God provides. We know the Bible says to seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to us, but somehow we get to thinking that when we have all these things then we will supplied. The problem is, that none of the other things can really satisfy. They only make us temporarily complete. On the other hand, when we have our need of the Lord fulfilled, those things fit well and feel great, but they are not the source of our joy.

For instance, when I am sick I want to be well. Often times, God becomes very important when people are sick or hurting but then once all of that is over, God moves back down on the list. In this case one is much better off to be sick with God than well without Him. So the greatest need is the presence of God. He is our healer and the one who keeps us well.

You see, what ever is at the top of our list becomes our source, and it has the responsibility of supplying all of our needs. When this is the case, as each thing is taken care of, another thing just moves up and once again we are in need. Let’s say for instance that the rent is the most pressing need right now. Oh but wait, you don’t feel well either. And then there is that person that offended you. I almost forgot the other bills that are do. Maybe I better put a different job at the top of the list. Do you see how this just tends to make things worse. No matter which one I put first, another one will take its place. Pretty soon we can see no end, and that is no fun.

Now let’s say we realize that our greatest need is our Lord God, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ. As we see Him joining us in taking care of things, we have hope and faith for each new day.

No matter what you may have on your list, if you will sincerely consider placing God at the top and allow Him to be your source; He has promised that you will not be disappointed.
