OUR PROTECTOR
The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name." (Psalm 91:14 NLT)
Recently as I was reading about how the Lord promises to protect us, I sensed Him asking me what His protection meant to me. Needless to say I had to stop reading and start thinking. My confession would be that His protection means everything and He is everything to me and that I trust Him completely to protect me. Yes that is what I would say, but looking at it after God posed that question I had to consider whether my actions matched my words.
God’s promise of protection covers every area of our lives. He promises to protect us from danger. He is a shield around us. That is his promise. Do we believe it? As protector, he is also our deliverer. He does not just stand between us and danger, but He is also happy to whisk us away to a safe place.
In His protection He also provides for the destruction of our enemies. He promises that no evil will conquer us. We need not be surprised when it comes at us; we need only to be quick to declare that the Lord is our refuge and our strength and that we put our trust in Him.
The more I considered God as my protector I realized that His protection package comes with provision as well. Just as my care for my family includes all that they need up to the extent of my ability to provide, the same is true with God who is my father. Now that moves us into a whole new realm, because God’s ability is without limit.
There is nothing that can slip past Him. There is nothing that is too difficult for Him. The fact is there is nothing that He would withhold from me. It is a fact! That is what He tells us in His Word. Well, that kind of thinking brought me back to God’s original question. Only now I realized that He was asking if I really believed He was my protector.
I guess I would have to say that I have limited God by not trusting Him as I should. After twenty years, I find that I am still just learning to lean on Jesus. I know that there are times when I should not fear and yet I do. I know that I am often slow to jump behind the promise of God’s protection, and instead I act like I have to manage the situation myself.
My new plan is to appreciate the fact that the Lord is my protector and to allow Him to do abundantly above and beyond what I can hope or imagine. He is your protector too. Have you been depending upon His protection? When we do we bring glory to His name. When we don’t, well we are declaring that He did not really mean what He promised. Lord forgive us all for taking your promises lightly. You alone are God.
