OUT WITH THE OLD
God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well. (Romans 12:6 NLT)
Aren’t you glad that scriptures tell us that God makes all things new and that the old things pass away? The thing that I think most of us have the hardest time with is letting the old things pass away. We stand holding on to them and wondering where the new things are, not realizing that the there is no place for the new if we are holding on to the old.
As we come to the close of this year we also approach a new year. What are we going to do with it? All over the world, people make their New Year resolutions and some even keep them for a while. Others really experience a change that stays. It takes letting go and even casting the old far away for the new things to take place.
Are you ready for something new? Are you ready for serious changes? If so, you are going to have to wave goodbye to the old things that are keeping you from the new things. You will have to let go of bitterness, greed, lust, or whatever may be hindering you. Maybe you don’t even know what it is for sure, but whatever it is it does not feel good. Well then just do what Paul said and forget what is behind and reach for what is ahead, and God will show you the way.
According to the scripture, God has given everyone the ability to do certain things well. Many of us however are not realizing the fulfillment of all that God has enabled us to do because we hold on to the old. The only real peace and fulfillment that there is in life is when we begin to use the gifts God has given us the way He intended them to be used.
I always liked to sing, and had a certain amount of success doing it. I wanted it so bad that I once said I would sell my soul to be a Los Vegas entertainer, and I very nearly did just that. Someone asked me when I was starting off to pursue that dream if I had ever sung gospel. I told them I liked gospel a lot but it was no way to make a living. The truth was that I enjoyed singing gospel more than anything. Much of what I wrote was a heart looking for God, but I just did not see it.
Once I finally came to know the Lord, I found true contentment using the gift the way God intended for me to use it. Once God gets control of our gifts, we find there are many more that were just waiting to be used.
Each person reading this has special gifts that God is ready to put to use. Forget those old ideas that you have nothing to offer and that nothing will ever be good for you and believe God for the new things. Remember, in order to experience them you will have to let go of old thinking and old attitudes that have kept you from God’s best for you. Remember, even if you have experienced some of the goodness of God there is still more. We can all use some improving. Start with me Lord.
