PASSING PEACE
And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God's peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds. (Philippians 4:7 ERV)
Peace has been what God is speaking to me about recently. As I went to sleep last night I heard, “Passing peace.” I like to go to sleep trying to figure out what He is talking about, however, I really do not necessarily like to wake up again in the middle of night thinking about it because it makes for a short night.
Some things about God’s peace that we need to be convinced of are: It is peace that passes understanding, and not just a passing peace. It is lasting peace and not a listing peace that may or may not stand or that can be easily sunk. It is peace that Jesus left with us and not one that leaves us, ever! His peace is peace that we can pass along; it does not pass away. His peace is power!
When you consider peace, you may not always think of power, but truly there is power in peace. Jesus had such peace that he confused people. When he was falsely accused, his peace caused the rulers to ask why He did not say anything. Peace exudes confidence and confidence is power. People who have power are often short on peace because they want things their way and they think their power should make it so. When that sort of power falls short they have no peace.
People who have God’s kind of peace also have patience. This patience allows for the power to come. Even in Christian circles, people who require power for confidence in God often are short of peace. Peace allows for the flow of God’s power in God’s time and never waivers. If we do waiver, we can be sure that His peace is still on guard, working to bring our thoughts and feeling into line. When we know His peace, our ultimate desire to rest in it and because of this we will ultimately return to that place.
This peace that God gives is something we can pass along. In fact, it will often transfer on its own. This brings to mind, the way that smart phones can share information. With a tap of the screen on one, the information just passes over to the other one. Peace can do this very thing.
The peace of God can literally calm a storm. It can bring order to disorder, and direction to the lost. How can you maintain peace in a storm? I can tell you that I have experienced God’s peace when it made no sense to have peace and it is the most wonderful peace. I can also admit that I have walked right past the peace that I knew was available and that is not wonderful at all.
Jesus left this peace with us. It is not working at times and withheld at other times. It is always the same just as He is always the same. Power happens and it is wonderful, but once it is released it is over. Peace on the other hand continues to amaze. We can live in it and pass it along everywhere we go. Power is always present with God’s peace.
