PATIENT ANTICIPATION

I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1)

Waiting and patiently are two words that are difficult to incorporate at the same time in our lives. As much as we would like to always be patient, the truth is it is hard. The key may be in trusting the Lord enough so that we are always anticipating His presence and expecting the goodness of God. That makes waiting more of a pleasure.
Like a child waiting to open a present, the excitement could become almost more than we can bear. Still, the present is right there in plain sight. The time will come when it is opened. Did David wait perfectly? I don’t know. Perhaps this was written after many trial runs. Perhaps he learned to wait patiently and expectantly and as a result he found out that God really did always hear him.
We can relax knowing that God is perfect even when are not. He is consistent when we are fit to be tied. He hears us whether we are patient and expectant or not. Learning to rest in this truth will help to sooth our souls.
It does not matter how long it took David to figure this out. It does not matter how perfect or imperfect he was. What matters is that God wants us to know that we can be sure that He hears our every cry. We can depend on Him. It is our privilege to show the world that God is dependable. We are called to keep standing even after we feel like we have done everything to stand.
Just before coming to the computer to write this, I was looking for something. It seems I am always looking for something! Well, I did not find it. I realize now that I was talking myself into patience as I looked. I finally told myself that I would find it later because this was most important. At the time, I did not see it as being exactly what I was going to write about.
I expect that the Lord heard me asking for help and before the day is over I will have found what I was looking for. Even if I don’t, there is always tomorrow. If I put things in His hands, I can live with anything. If I take it out of His hands I can make myself miserable and others miserable as well.
I really do not enjoy making other people miserable. God expects us all to reveal His goodness in the midst of the turmoil. Well maybe it is better to say that He provides us all we need to do it and the more we practice the better we will be at it.
There is a song that says, “This is my desire, to honor you.” That is our ultimate desire isn’t it? Of course it is. Let’s turn up our trust in the Lord. That in turn will increase our patience and soon we will find that we are waiting patiently and expectantly. He will never let us down!
