PEACE
...And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 NKJ)
If you have heard the word preached, studied it on your own, or even listened a little in passing, then you have probably heard this verse, which talks about God’s peace. God’s peace is such a great peace that it is something that should be pursued. It is something people want, but it seems so hard to get. And if we do get it, it seems so hard to keep. So what can we do?
All of the things that we see and study in the word of God are promises from God. So that means that through Christ all these things are already ours. But we wonder why they seem so hard to get if we already are supposed to have them. Well, Jesus said if you can believe, then all things are possible with God. All things are yes and amen. I know, it sounds so simple, why does it seem so difficult to experience. Well, we know that God is faithful, so the difficulty must be our doing. Yes, I know that the devil throws a lot of distractions at us, but still it is up to us to knock him out of the way and stand on the truth.
Have you ever noticed how a child with cling to a favorite thing? With my children it has always been their blankets. If the blanket was lost, everything had to stop while we looked for it. Once it was found, the child quickly grabbed it and peace was restored. Sometimes if I awaken in the night and my mind is running to fast and I cannot pray myself back to sleep, I have found that rolling over and holding my bride for a moment will help me to just relax and go back to sleep. The other day when I did this, the Lord spoke to me and said that just as simply as a child will take the blanket or I can roll over to cuddle, in the same way, I can just come to Him. The key is in receiving. The child does not reject his blanket. A child will reject a substitute, but they will never reject the real thing. I would reject a stranger in my bed, but not my bride.
Now the fact is that a child may not always have a blanket, and as they grow older they are not nearly so dependant on it. I may not always have my bride. But I will always have God. He is as close as the mention of His name. In fact He waits for us to call and when we do He comes.
We need only to hunger and thirst after Him. We need to see Him as our total source. We need to learn to go to Him first and reject all substitutes. So many people want the benefits of God, but are not willing to do whatever is necessary to receive them. We are all guilty of having our favorite blankets. The things that we feel like if we have them, everything is okay. God does not want us to depend on blankets or people or anything else. He wants us to depend on Him. And so we should seek those things cause us to look to Him and we should reject anything that keeps us from Him. He has it all ready for us; we just have to believe in Him.
