PEACE AND WAR

Asa did what was pleasing and good in the sight of the Lord His God. "The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. What a fool you have been! From now on you will have war." (2 Chronicles 14:2 & 16:10)

There was peace all around when Asa trusted in the Lord. When Asa kept Himself in the Love of God and when he relied totally upon the Lord there was no weapon formed against him that could prosper. We could say that He kept a good level of fresh water in the sea of his faith.

If you read chapters 14 thru 16 of 2nd Chronicles, you will see that he was full when he was trusting the Lord when he was busy about the Lord’s business. He commanded the people to seek the Lord and so his kingdom enjoyed peace. No one even tried to make war against him because the Lord was giving him rest from his enemies. He boldly proclaimed that the land was theirs because they sought the Lord.

When an army three times as large as his own came to attack, He sought the Lord and the Lord defeated them. They even entered into a covenant with God declaring that anyone who would not seek God should be killed. He even took his grandmother off the throne for making an obscene Asherah pole. Asa was fully committed to the Lord until the 36th year of his reign and then for some reason, he just forgot that God was his strength and protector and he sought the hand of man instead. As result, the prophet declared he would no longer have peace but war.

We have probably all experienced ups and downs in our walk with God. We have all had times where it was pretty peaceful as well as times when there was an all out war. If we look at those times, we will probably find that we were the most at peace when we were seeking God and trusting Him no matter what enemy came at us. When we refuse to compromise and refuse to doubt, the living water level of our faith is full and fresh.

However, when we fail to stay on top of our game, so to speak, and cease to take land for the kingdom of God, our level tends to evaporate and become cloudy. It is at those moments that the enemy who is always looking around for an opportunity to devour us, comes in and tries to do as much damage as he can. Sometimes we quickly recover and his attack is diverted. Other times we begin to sink and he shoves us further under water.

We read about Asa, and we wonder how in the world after all that the Lord had done for him, how could he forget God and go looking for support from another king. Then we realize that we too have probably done the same thing. At one point we pray and trust God for everything and then suddenly we find ourselves acting like we doubt that God can do a thing to help us. The conclusion is simple. Seek the Lord and have peace. Forget the Lord and have war. In everything…seek the Lord.
