PEOPLE

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness: (Genesis 1:26 NKJV)

Recently as I was talking with God and had one of those moments where it made no sense for me to be talking, when He of course knows a lot more than me! So I asked God what was on His mind and He simply said, “People.” That word went right down into my heart, and my initial thought was that I needed to be more people minded. For days I just kept going over that one word and the implications of it.

I thought about how we may think we know people and about people, but we do not know them like God does. I thought about how we may try to fix people with our prayers when we should just be thinking about people. I thought about how people need the Lord and lots of different things about people and how I should learn to focus more on people. However, in the end of that thinking I decided that there was more to what God was telling me with that word.

It was at the prison in a time of amazing worship that it all became clear or at least clearer than it was. God has people on His mind. The best thing for us is to have God on our mind. Yes, I know; how obvious is that?

The truth is, the more we think about people, the more we can mess things up. Think about it. When we get focused on people, we get focused on what we want for them or what they need or what they do wrong, or any of number of things.

If a pastor or evangelist or a congregation focuses on people, they can be caught up in the idea of more people or not enough people etc. What if we are doing this and God has other things in mind? You see our thoughts may not be bad, but they may fall short of what is best.

On the other hand, if we keep our eyes, thoughts, and emotions focused on God, He can get the best thoughts to us. He can get us to the people we can do the most for. He can open doors that we do not even see.

Jesus kept His focus on Our Father. He ministered to the people the Father brought to Him. He ministered to the people that the Father pointed out to Him. When it came to His thoughts on people He said He did not need them because He knew their hearts! Ouch, that seems a little harsh.

Have you ever been hurt because you misread someone’s heart? Jesus wept over Jerusalem. He was betrayed by the very people He led. If His eyes were on the people, He could not have stood it. He left people to God and He focused on God. God is the source of comfort and wisdom in the face of people failures in our lives. The more we keep Him on our minds the more we will know His mind for the people.
