PERFECT MEASURE

...Till we all come to unity of the faith and knowledge of the Son of God to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:13)

Would you believe that there are a lot of people who have no desire what so ever to know Jesus let alone be like Him? For those dear souls we pray that there will be a change in their thinking. Would you believe that many Christians do not see it as a necessity to be like Jesus? Part of that is do to the fact that it never occurred to them that they could or should.

Even though Jesus said that He was sending us out like His Father sent Him, and even though Jesus said we would do even greater works than He did, the tendency for most believers is to see those things as outlandish ideas. Have you ever wondered why Jesus would say such things if He did not mean them?

Some time ago we began to look at the measure of Christ’s gift that was given to each of us. We acknowledged that from all appearances, everyone gets the same one. We then looked at what a treasure this measure was, is, and always will be. We noted that it is often neglected, rejected, used, and abused, but still it is given to all who will receive it, and it is good for all who will believe it.

The purpose of the gift in the first place is that it be perfected. Many people see being like Jesus as so impossible that it is not worth the effort to even try. Some dare to fantasize over the idea, but give up and continue thinking that being a Christian should be nothing but a struggle with more failures than victories.

If we could forget any preconceived ideas that we have been taught or learned on our own and look at what God has written simply for what it says, perhaps we can ease the burden, lighten load, and grow as God intends. It looks to me like God gave us each a measure with a purpose in mind. He then anointed different people who were willing work with this measure so that they could help others along the way.

The finished product is stated in this scripture. The measure is given and the help is provided so that we can grow into that perfect man that God intends and enables us to be. Of course He knew it would not happen in our own strength, it could only come with the fullness of Christ. And so our measure is a treasure that surpasses anything we can imagine. Let’s mine this treasure until we arrive at the place that God intended in the first place. Even if we don’t get there this side of heaven, the journey will certainly be a greater one as we press toward this prize of the high call of God in Christ Jesus.
