PERFECT TENSION
Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. (2 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV)
I think we all agree that it is important to keep our faith in tune. If we are in tune, we present a melody that glorifies God. It is important that our instrument is always tuned and ready to present the life that is in Christ Jesus. Scripture tells us to be prepared at every opportunity to defend or display the hope that is within us. Our hope must be consistent and confident with no hint of wavering; we can then diffuse this sweet song of the knowledge of Him everywhere.
If you know anything about stringed instruments, you know that they are tuned by tension and just the right amount of tension produces the sound that they are intended to make. There was a time when I prepared to sing for a wedding and left my guitar on its stand to await the actual ceremony. As I struck the first chord, I realized that it was now very out of tune. Without my knowing, someone had played with the tuning knobs. I quickly switched to a light tinkling on the strings and more of an acappella vocal presentation and for the most part, I believe I was the only one who really knew how bad it was. It taught me a lesson that I have never forgotten about leaving a guitar unattended and assuming it would be in tune when I returned.
This same thing can easily be applied when it comes to the tune of our faith. If we want it to sound right, we need to keep it in tune. We cannot just leave it unattended and expect it to be ready. We also cannot allow other people, things, or circumstance to mess with it. We have a song that the world must hear!
Another thing to pay attention to is how tension affects our tune. Through Christ we are perfectly in tune. In Him, we are locked in! It is up to us to train ourselves to remain constant. If we allow increased tension to have its way with us we can become very out of tune. It can stretch us, cause our tone to become sharp, and throw us out of tune. If we do not respond quickly to fix it, we may snap and do damage we never intended to do. It is a lot easier to wind it down than it is to have to change the string. If on the other hand we get lazy in our faith, our tone can go flat and trying to wind it up quickly in order to get in tune can also leave an opening for destruction.
The truth remains that God has perfectly tuned us. An instrument in perfect tune is so easy to play. There is no strain, only perfect sound. We do not need to be concerned about tension; God has perfectly equipped us to triumph in Christ. When we are fine tuned even the most difficult songs sound good. Thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ.
