PILES OF FAITH
And those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. (Josh 4:20)
I think that every believer in Jesus Christ has times when they have “piles of faith” and other times when it seems our faith is in a pile! We can be so strong and so sure and then all of a sudden something comes up and we wonder if we know God at all. Guess what, this does not surprise God!
When Joshua led the people over the Jordan, God actually had him make two monuments. One pile of rocks they left in the midst of the Jordan where the priests had stood holding the ark and the other they made from stones that they carried from the midst of the river and set up in Gilgal.
The pile in the midst of the river was every bit as real as the pile in Gilgal. The difference was that they could see one and the other they could not see. They knew it was there and no one could take that away from them but they could not see it.
The pile in Gilgal was for future generations so that when they saw the rocks they could be told the story of how God had blessed them and stopped the River Jordan and how the people had passed over on dry ground. They could also add that there was another pile just like it out in the middle of the river. There was one pile they could always see and another pile that they could only imagine.
I see a picture here of faith! On the one hand, they had evidence in Gilgal of something they could not see in the middle of the River. Hebrews tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for…the evidence of things not seen.
Sometimes, we can see God moving so clearly, and other times we just have to stand on what we know to be true. Sometimes there is a pile we can stand beside and see every dimple in the rocks. We can write notes about all that God is doing. We can see the picture. Other times, we have to stand by the river just as sure that God is working even though we can’t see it. The fact is that if we will believe it, God is doing far more during those times when we are standing without seeing that when are seeing it all happen before our eyes.
Since this is Mother’s Day, I want to say that those piles are much like a mother’s love. Even when I did much to give my mother reason not to love me, I never doubted that she did. Whether I was near where I could see it, or far away where I did not deserve it, I knew I could count on her love. Even when mothers would prefer not to love they still do. Even when it looks like they don’t, deep down they still do. Needless to say, we can be even more certain of God than we are of a mother’s love. If you don’t have a mothers love today, you can be sure you have God’s. So whether your faith is piled high today, or your faith is in a pile, fear not for God is with you. Love a mother today in His name!
