PLANS
I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.(Jeremiah 29:11 NKJ)
I have to tell you, that I frequently turn to this scripture for my security and comfort. This usually happens when I have been wondering if I am following the plan God has for me or not. There may well be others who run into this same wall at times so I pray this will encourage you.
I go through these times when I have been hearing a lot about future plans that others are receiving. They seem to know what they are going to be doing five years down the road. Like God has shown them that far in advance. I am not sure that I ever know even a day in advance what God has in mind. Right now, I have tickets for a trip to Russia. I am pretty sure that I will be going, but I also know that God could change my plans.
Anyway, the other day as I sat and gave the Lord the line about wanting His will and wanting to make sure that I was in His plan and that I was not missing something by not having it all laid out for a few years in advance. He must think “here we go again” when I start this. God said to me, “It is not nearly so important to have a plan, as it is to plan to do what I tell you when I tell you.” The next day I was reading about a man who had worked on a plan he had for several years and then it seemed that nothing was happening. God asked him to commit the rest of his life to the place he was in before He would open any doors. The man did it and the doors opened. Oh, God wants commitment! What a concept.
To be honest, if God had shown me years in advance what He was doing, I might not have wanted to stay with His plan. I really think it is wonderful that some folks get long range plans from God, but not everyone does. The important thing is that we know God knows the thoughts and plans He has for us and that His first concern is us.
We must be confident of His personal thoughts of and for us before He will ever be able to use us for anything in the way we might be thinking He would want to use us. I have known many people who were certain God cared about other people and that He was willing to help lots of other people, but when it came to them, they were not so sure that God had time to think about them.
What am I trying to say here? If you have a plan praise the Lord and follow it. If you don’t feel like you have one, praise the Lord and do what ever you do as unto the Lord. Plan to be available for anything God wants, any time He wants it. Commit yourself to being committed. Truthfully, some people need a plan to be comfortable, and others would just as soon not worry about what is coming. God works with us according to how he made us. He needs people who are steadily moving on a particular plan, and he needs people who can be scrambled in the middle of the night. We all simply need to plan to follow His plans for us and trust Him that they are for peace, future, and hope.
