POWER IN THE BLOOD

Now the Lord says, "You are going to find out that I am the Lord." Look! I will hit the water of the Nile with this staff, and the river will turn to blood. (Exodus 7:17 NLT)

Anyone who has read the Bible, gone to church, or watched the movies, knows how God turned the waters of Egypt into blood. However, recently it occurred to me that even though everything in the water died, there was in fact life in that display of God’s power. Any time the power of God is displayed there is an opportunity for people to find life. All of Egypt could have turned to the true God in response to that miracle.

There is a wonderful spiritual picture in how God set that miracle up. First, God displayed his power over the serpent. Moses threw down his staff and it turned into a snake. God told him to grab it again and it turned back into a staff. The devil is scary at times and tempts us continually, but we can grab him in the power of God and he must flee.

When Pharaoh’s magicians made a feeble attempt at doing what God did, God’s snake ate theirs up and then submitted to Moses once again. No power can stand against the power of God, but often time’s people prefer their own delusions rather than the truth of God’s word. It was true then, and it is true now.

When Pharaoh refused the first display, God sent Moses back to turn all of the water of Egypt into blood. In response, the magicians managed to turn only a little water into blood, but based on that Pharaoh refused to do what God said. I think we have all wondered what it will take to convince some people of how good God is. I am sure that someone felt the same way about us at one time or another. I still wonder about myself at times!

We need to understand, that all miracles have the potential to produce the life of God in people’s hearts. No natural thing could live in that bloody water, but super natural things were in the making. The thought of all the water turning to blood is repulsive when we only glimpse at it. In the same way, when we talk about the blood of Jesus it is not a very appealing picture at first glance. We need to get past what it looks like and sounds like and see the benefits before it becomes a desirable subject. It is sort like getting a shot. All kids and many adults hate them, but we tell them it is for their own good. God said, “Forget not the benefits.”

An understanding of the power that is in the blood of Jesus is not only good for us, it is necessary if we are going be and do all that God has called us to. After all, scripture does tell us that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and word of our testimony. It still takes the blood to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. It is still the blood that keeps away the power of death. It was the blood of Jesus one time sacrifice that opened the door to the presence of God for all who will believe.

God’s miracles in the form of the plagues were all life giving displays to those who would believe that He was the Lord. Pharaoh refused to believe and many died as a result. We will never know until we get to heaven how many did believe and turn to God. In the same sense, we will never know how many lives are changed as we plead the blood of Jesus in the Name of Jesus over our families, communities, and around the world. We will never know how many plagues are kept from our doors by faith in that same blood. There is power, power, wonder working power in the precious blood of the Lamb.
