POWER PLAY

Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn't here! (Luke 24:5-6 NLT)

What a great day! We celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord today and everyday! Good Friday we looked at the cross. Every time someone looks to the cross it is a good day. Today, we look at the culmination of the ultimate power play. Today we celebrate the power over death and sin!
Yes, Jesus took the power away from sin as well as death. Paul reminds us that sin no longer has any power over those who are in Christ. As I thought about this, it occurred to me that just about everyone wants that power over death. Even when I was lost I hoped for a good end; I just was not so interested in the power over sin. The bible tells us that there is pleasure in sin for a season. The truth is that sometimes we just do not want to give up our sin.
Well, when we come to Jesus it is a package deal. Whether we want it not, we gain an awareness of sin that we did not have before. Of course to come to Christ, we must repent. We must be sorry for our sin and we should never be comfortable with our sin again after that. Holy Spirit is always near to remind us. Of course scripture warns us against becoming hard hearted. Today is a good day to remember the power play. We are no longer slaves. We are children of God. If we are children of God then we are heirs of His promises. We can know the truth and the truth makes us free.
The truth is that from time to time we want to believe that certain things are not on the list that we are free from or there are things we want to hold on to just a little longer. There is that bit of bitterness or unforgiveness that we want to entertain for a just little while. Everyone has their little thing or big thing that just hangs around until we apply the power that God has given us over it.
The victory is won, but we are warned that the battle continues to rage. I think about the people who cheered wildly as Jesus entered the city, and I wonder how many of them turned in only a few days and joined the crowd calling for Jesus crucifixion. Then I think about the times that I praise Him with passion and turn around and deny His power to deliver me from whatever it is that I seem to let keep me from bringing Him the glory that I should.
I join Paul in being thankful that Jesus gives me the victory. I am just so sorry that I linger outside the celebration for so long sometimes. Truly, the things I want to do because I am His, I sometimes do not do like I should and the things I never want to do again, manage to show up.
The big, ugly, and obvious things are not really much of problem to leave behind; it is more the little things that take root. The problem is, if we get comfortable with the little things they can grow. Jesus died and rose again to give us power over death and sin. Use all the power!
