POWER TO UNDERSTAND
And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (Ephesians 3:18-19 NLT)
Paul said in Romans chapter 8 that he was convinced that nothing could separate us from the Love of God. He was convinced that in the greatest times of fear or destruction that God was still in love with us and nothing would change that. Now in Ephesians Paul is telling the folks and all who would read his letter later that he wanted them to receive the power it takes to understand the greatness of God’s love so that they too would be convinced.
This makes me think that somewhere along the way people were asking Paul how he could be so sure. How often have you or someone else said, “I just don’t get it. How can we be sure?” Well when it comes to God and His Word, we must be sure; if we are not sure, then just about anything can tip us over. Though I am not a student of martial arts, I heard that it has a great deal to do with balance and getting your opponent off balance. I remember in the Karate Kid movie when the young man would stand and stand on one leg.
We too, must stand and stand on the firm foundation of Jesus. The enemy just roams around waiting for us to get off balance. The slightest doubt opens the door to his attack. To acknowledge any of his lies opens the door to getting knocked off and out of our faith. But being thoroughly convinced of His love keeps us from that.
Remember we are told how His love keeps us and that we should keep ourselves in the love of God. No matter what the circumstances may be, if we will hold fast to the fact that He loves us, that in itself will not only keep us, but it will propel us into the fullness of His promise. He watches over His word to perform it. When we declare our confidence in His love, He rushes to perform it and confirm it and in so doing, He reveals it.
Since the beginning of knowing God I have believed the concept of His love. I have said that He loves, smiles, and laughs at me at times. In the past I have based my confidence on that in the things that He has done. In other words, I based it on the past. The thing that I sense from God now, is that while I should most certainly be encouraged by His past performance, I have failed to see that love as something to base future expectations on. I have thanked Him based on His performance, but not necessarily drawn on that love to produce like I should. Like we all should! When I questioned Him about this, He simply said that when we see a door open we should walk through it without wondering where it was before. I am in need of power to understand. His love is greater than we have yet understood. It is the door to all the fullness of the God life!
