POWERFUL THINGS
He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly. (Luke 1:17 NLT)
What could be more powerful than a changed life? It takes the power of God to transform and to reform. We cannot make lasting changes on our own. We cannot see that we need to change on our own. We may change some things for a time, but how do we know how changed we are? God warns us about fooling ourselves when we compare ourselves by ourselves or even with ourselves.
God made drastic changes in my life when I first met Him, but I knew there was more. I knew there was more to Jesus and knew that there was more work to be done in me. I also know that there is still more work to be done. Do you long for more of God in your life? God is everywhere, so we can be sure that He is around. He is present. He is always mighty to save. More than that, He wants to dwell in us and set us completely free.
Jesus told us that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives. We are to lay hands on the sick and cast out devils and speak with new tongues. I think God gives us a new way of speaking as well as a prayer language. We become people who love to speak of the greatness of God. We become people who love the Lord! God does the powerful things; we are simply a means of completing the circuit.
John never performed a single miracle in the sense that we think of the miraculous. At the same time, the power of God in his words changed people. He prepared hearts to receive Jesus. He changed rebellious hearts into hearts that would long for the wisdom of God. Salvation lasts forever. Miracles last for a day or even a lifetime, but it is possible to receive a miracle and not have a changed heart.
I want to do everything that Jesus wants me to do. I want to pray for the sick and see them recover. I want all the outward signs that God will provide. But more than that, I want to be inside what God wants me to be. Paul once spoke of His concern about saving the world and losing his own soul. His solution for that was to continue to grow inside and outside.
It is a powerful thing to believe God. It is a powerful thing to trust when we do not see or feel any evidence. It is a powerful thing to walk in faith. This kind of walk does not come by our might or power. This power comes from Holy Spirit.
Before I met Jesus, I could do some things in my own power temporarily. When I proved what I could do, I think some of those things were things that deep down I had a desire to do on a deeper level. I realize now that it was God working all along. That is powerful thing!
