PREFER TO BELIEVE
"He who believes in Me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." (John 7:38 NKJ)
Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly; here He gives us a key to that life! In other passages He says that He gives us the keys to the kingdom. All of this may have been cloudy to the people when they heard it, but to us it should be clear as a cloudless sky. Remember, it has been given to us to understand. God has given us everything necessary for life. If we care to believe, that is.
It seems to be that believing starts with caring. I recently realized that it was because I did not care about the things of God that I had no understanding of them. Then when by His grace a light came on, I was suddenly very interested in finding out how He could change my life. Of course my first concern was for escaping what I knew my eternity should be. Then with just a little more searching I started to sense there was much more to this life that God offered.
As with all things in the Kingdom of God, there is always something more. There are always greater benefits to be found in greater understanding. I believe that it is of utmost importance that we continue to care and press until we reach the place where we prefer to believe. We always have a choice, and if we will prefer to believe God, then we will most certainly gain the Kingdom of God at every intersection.
Remember Moses; he was so close to God. In a sense it just does not seem fair that after all that he had experienced with God, that God would deny him the privilege of leading the people into the promised land over a little thing like striking the rock instead of speaking to it. However, since all those things were written for our benefit, it should speak to us of the importance of preferring to believe every word that comes from the mouth of God. We always miss something when we prefer our own way over the Lord’s way.
I saw a bit of us all in Moses as I thought about this situation. Not only did he prefer his own way here, but he also never seemed to take full responsibility for his actions. When he talked to the people, he pointed out that God was mad at him because of them. I am certain that by the time he and God spoke on the mountain the last time, Moses was at peace with the whole thing. It just took a while.
Sometimes it takes us a while as well, but the important thing is that we keep on until we arrive at the place where we simply prefer to believe. I miss the mark on many occasions, but one thing I have decided is that I will always prefer to believe God. I believe He is good. I believe He is perfect. I believe He has good plans for me. I believe life and death are in my mouth and that a river of life has been given to me. Now I just need to always speak and act according to what I prefer to believe!
