PROMISES

Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. (Matthew 14:7 NKJ)

What a sad day this was for Herod. He did not want to grant this evil desire of his dancing daughter. He was the king. He could have refused such an evil request and demanded a more reasonable request. After all, what kind of person passes up half of the kingdom for a mans head on a platter! But because he promised in front of his friends, he did what he did not want to do.

We should be careful to never make promises that we cannot or do not intend to keep. One thing we must acknowledge about Herod was that he kept his promise even to his own hurt. The bible tells us that this is an honorable trait. In Herod’s case it is a perversion of the trait because of the evil involved but it is important that we keep our promises.

Why do people want be promised things? Isn’t it because it gives them assurance and hope? How many times have you heard about broken promises ship wrecking peoples’ lives? There are countless stories of how peoples’ lives have literally been put on hold while they wait for a promise to be fulfilled even after the promise breaker is long gone!

Well one day as I was spending time with the Lord, He told me to read Matthew chapter 14. There are a lot of good things in that chapter, like Jesus feeding a huge crowd with a few loaves and fish, and walking on the water with Peter, and healing every sick person that touched the hem of His garment. This was their request by the way. On other occasions He simply healed everyone in the crowd.

Well I read the chapter and then read it again, and finally realized what the Lord was trying to show me. He wanted me to see how Herod kept his promise. So if Herod can keep a promise, how much more will God keep His promises?

The other things that take place in this chapter are a result of God’s promises. He keeps His promises. It hurt to see His son die on the cross, but it was a promise He made for us. It was the only way that He could fulfill His pleasure of giving us the Kingdom.

God will not leave us waiting on the curb. He will not forget about us. He will not withhold one good thing from us. Jesus said that what ever we ask, He will do for us. Is God more faithful than Herod? That is a silly question! The real question is, “Just how faithful do we believe that God is?”

When Jesus taught the disciples to pray, wasn’t it really a list of reminders of the promises of God? We are reminded where He is, of His name above all names, of His promise to supply all our needs and forgive all of our sins. We are reminded that God will not tempt us and that He will always deliver us. After all, His is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever. He keeps His promises!
