PROVING THE PERFECT

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2 NKJ)

Prove it! How many times have you heard or said that in your life time? It starts when we are little children and it really never stops. We want proof of things. Well God wants proof too. The problem was that we had no strength to maintain the proof. We often say things and mean it when we say it but then we say or do things that would make it appear that what we said was not true at all. I think you know what I mean. We have all been disappointed. We have all known the pain of broken trust in one way or another.
God sent Jesus to prove what His perfect will was. Jesus assured us that we would be like Him. He sent the Holy Spirit to empower us to be and do what was that perfect will of God. It is in knowing Jesus that we begin to desire to be what He planned all along.
The thing is, it requires effort. It requires determination. It requires desire. Desire will produce determination, which will produce effort but it is not necessarily easy. It is not easy because we are bit selfish. We want our own way. We want things to go the way we want them to go.
The key is resting in Jesus. That is the only place that rest is acceptable. If we rest anywhere else, we will slide. If we slide we feel shame and condemnation. We slip and fall and the enemy encourages us to just give up.
A picture that comes to mind is football on a slippery field. In the NFL, if a player slips and falls they begin to check out the spikes and change the shoes. Well, I see the Holy Spirit as the traction when it is slippery. In fact, He warns us ahead of time and will put us in the right shoes in advance if we pay attention. An athlete will also adjust his running to the conditions and so it is in our walk of faith.
Knowing Jesus should produce a desire to prove His power and presence in our lives. He does not want just a casual relationship, He wants a lifelong marriage. He wants us to be true because that is the only way He can be. He is faithful even when we are not, but we limit His presence and performance in our lives when we drift away. We are His children. We all know how easy it is for a child to slip out of our protective clutches. From toddler to adult, we can only protect in a limited amount of space. God’s reach is much larger and only requires the mention of His name and desire for His presence.
What is in your heart? Do you desire to prove that good and acceptable and perfect will of God? Do you desire to prove His ability to transform your life? It does require effort. It is a lifelong endeavor. It is worth every second, because it is from this relationship that all blessings flow.
