PRUNED AND PURIFIED
Then the Lord God called to Adam and said him, "Where are you? (Genesis 3:9)
My intention for this devotion was to move to confession or profession and how important they are to possession, but God had a better idea. Imagine that! He pointed out that our position must be secure and from that secure position we secure victory after victory.
Once again that question from the garden, “Where are you,” remains current. In the military everything depends on position and getting into the best position. We often want to know where people are so that we know when we can expect them or where to find them. In athletics being in the right position makes the difference in whether a score is made or stopped. We hear people said that they were in either right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time. No doubt the Lord is bringing other position examples into your mind right now.
The thing that the Lord brought to my remembrance was what it difference it makes when we know our position. Let me share what the Lord did for me. When I first began this journey with the God, I knew I had discovered something really good, and I did not want to risk changing directions. I was certain it was possible to turn away, and I had folks who were willing to bet it would not last or that I could not last! The songs I wrote reflected my joy at this wonderful journey and my prayers that God would keep me on it. I was sure it was good and just as sure that I was not good enough.
Because I was not confident in my position, every time someone would say, “If you are not certain that you would go to heaven if you died today, raise your hand,” I would be first to raise my hand. I thought it would be presumptuous to think that I could be sure already. Well a kind gentleman took me on a walk and explained that I could in fact be sure. It was such a relief to have that assurance. It set me free to run the race instead of being strapped to the treadmill, running hard and not seeming to really get anywhere. Everything that I had studied had been good for me and I was being well conditioned, but not really having any confidence to put that conditioning to the test. Now that all changed!
John 15:3 declared that I had been pruned and purified. It was finished. It was time to run in such a way as to not only win the prize but take people along. The movie, “Forrest Gump,” comes to mind as he ran and ran and others ran with Him. Of course he was just running, but we are running with a purpose. John 15:16 assures us that this is God’s idea. He chose us for a purpose and we are empowered for that purpose.
You see, when you realize that you have been positioned for victory; that God has given you the upper hand; you have confidence to declare the truth for yourself, for others, and for the whole wide world.
Do you see yourself in that position? Do you realize it is not about you but about God? It is not by your power or might; it is by His Spirit. It is a fact that we can forget where we are, and when we do we are vulnerable. Listen and you will hear the Spirit reminding you where you are.
