PURPOSE

So our aim is to please Him always, whether we are here in this body or away (2Cor 5:9 NLT)

I have a watch that is kept running by motion. It has a fancy name for self-winding but that is what it is. I noticed this morning that it had stopped even though I had shaken it yesterday. I don’t wear it all the time, so it needs to be handled a little to keep in going. This morning I picked it up, reset it, and shook it and then went to read and pray. A little later I looked and it had stopped again. It occurred to me that the watch is like our walk with God. It needs to be in steady motion. You can’t just shake it up once in a while; you need to keep it going. The watch is made to work with steady fluid motions and so is our faith.

Then I read this verse and it spoke to me of the way that a relationship with God gave my life purpose. It really is the purpose that God placed in all of us, but until we come to realize it we spend our time trying to find purpose in other things. We think money will fulfill us, but it doesn’t. Jobs, hobbies, friends, children, or any of a number of other things can become our focus, but they will never really fill that place that God put in our hearts.

Just think about it. When pleasing God is our purpose or aim; that gives us something to measure everything by. If at the end of the day we can look and see that we pleased God as we went about our life, then we had a good day. If on the other hand we find that we missed the mark on a few things, well we know how we can fix it and that gives us confidence for the next day.

When it is on our mind to please God, the Holy Spirit can redirect our thoughts or actions as we go and we have the satisfaction of knowing we are led of the Lord. If others criticize but we know that we have done what God wants, then we need not fall apart under that criticism.

For a long time I have believed that peace is a good barometer in our walk with God. When our purpose is to please God, peace is a direct result. It is well with our soul when we know we are pleasing God, or when we understand what needs to change to do so.

The desire to please God keeps our faith in motion. As long as we are in motion, then we will keep running this race and we will win. When it is our desire to please Him, even if we are headed the wrong way it will be turned to good. It is when people lose interest in their walk with God that they become like my watch that needs motion to run. There are times when it has gone to long without running that I just leave it lay until I have time to set all the day and date stuff again. This happens to people in their faith as well. They wake up one day and find that they have come to a standstill. Then they have to fight through the condemnation and all the other things the devil will throw at them to try and keep them stopped. All it takes is a motion in His direction and He will restart us. What is your purpose? Pleasing God pays big dividends.
