RECEIVE AND PROFIT

For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. (Hebrews 4:2 NKJ)

My wife recently said something to me and then asked, “What do you think about that?” My response was that I didn’t! I had just crawled into bed and I was determined not to think! I wanted to go into receive mode. You see, I had been thinking about this verse in Hebrews off and on for a couple of days and I wanted to hear about it without the clutter of my thinking getting in the way.

I do not know about you, but there are many times when I start to hear something and before I get the whole thing I am thinking of an answer. Because of this I have tried to train myself to let the words land and settle for a while before responding either out loud or to myself.

Most of us have answered the phone only to hear a high pitched squeal on the other end of the line. If we are familiar with fax messages we know what it is and switch the phone to the fax receive mode. A couple of things come to mind as I consider this. One being that if we do not know this or do not have a fax machine we will never know what was coming so we cannot respond to it. If someone was visiting our home and did not know how to switch to fax mode, all they could tell us was that there was something wrong with our phone! The other thought is that when fax machines communicate, once the fax that is receiving tells the sender they are ready, all the receiver does is listen and then it produces exactly what it hears in a form that we can use.

If we are not convinced that what God says is true, we will never have the confidence to mix faith with it. It will simply be like a high pitched sound on the phone and we will be inclined to just hang it up. If we will at least consider that it might be important we can ask someone for help in switching to the receiver mode. I spent many years believing that God existed, but never interested in really finding out what good that was. I simply hung up on the signals. Then came the day that I wondered what in the world that sound was. My what a change it makes when we go into receive mode.

Now I find that I need to be careful not to interrupt what God has to say with what I think I already know. I want to be able to let the Lord know that I am ready to receive and then just hear what He says. He put everything into motion and then entered His rest. We can now rest in what He puts in motion knowing that what He says He is also able to perform. So if He says we can do something then we can.

My dad used to put things in motion with words. He would say, “Let’s get that yard mowed.” I would receive that word and the yard would be mowed. I knew it was in my best interest to be sure that I did what I heard! I should be even more convinced that God’s word will profit me if I simply mix faith with it. Are you receiving?
