REDEEMING THE TIME
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15-16)
Have you ever been in a conversation that needs redeeming? Have you ever watched a movie or a television show and thought or said, “That is two hours I can never get back? Or maybe we look at our phone quickly, and it quickly turns into more wasted time that we wanted to spend? We have all wasted time.
Ephesians 5 starts out telling us to imitate God in everything we do because we are His dear children. In another place we are called ambassadors for Christ. We are created as instruments of worship. We are in fact, held in high regard by Christ! He redeemed us and he has now sent us to the world just as the Father sent Him.
As we read God’s word, it is pretty normal to find ourselves thinking that He is talking about someone else. He can’t expect us all to be like that! The truth is, He made us all like that! He has come into our lives, and He is transforming us. Part of the reason that scriptures make us squirm is because we know it is true and right, and we just don’t want to do it!
How can we possibly redeem anything? Think about it. If you are in a conversation that is going wrong, it only takes one word to redeem that whole conversation. We can turn things around.
In Christ, we have all that we need to be world changers. Wait a minute, that is a pretty big statement. Maybe the whole world will not know about what we redeemed, but God does. There is a pretty good chance that you have changed someone’s world. You may have spoken a word, or given a meal, or even a smile that changed things. Even if it is for a short time, that time has been redeemed.
If we will only be aware of what is possible because we represent God on this earth, it will change how we approach this life.
There is no need to take this on like it is a burden and more responsibility that we want to be held accountable for. It is, instead, a huge opportunity. Ask the Lord to use you to redeem the time. The days are evil, but we are here to change that. Everywhere you step is holy ground. Where you are, things are different.
Yes, you have been rescued and now you are a rescuer! What do you think about that? You are a difference maker. You are an ambassador for Christ.
You can live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. No one knew who He was when He came into His ministry, except his cousin John who announced Him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world! Let the redeemed of the Lord, say so!
