REDESPERATE

...If by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. (Philippians 3:11)

I thought we might as well start out with a new word this year, and the word is re-desperate! It is not a word that you will find in the dictionary but it is a thought that prayerfully will be a driving force from now until forever! We need to renew our desperation for the Lord and His presence. This is not something we should do today and feel good about the fact that we did it, but rather it is something we should do daily. We need to remain desperate for the Lord.

Paul said that he counted everything as trash compared to knowing Christ. He said that he would do anything to attain to the resurrection from the dead. The fact is that we are continually presented opportunities to rise from the deadness of our old selves into the life that is in Christ. The best way to do this is maintain our desperation for the presence of God.

As you read through the history of Israel in the bible, you see a circle of events that just keeps repeating; they seek the Lord and they are blessed. They forget the Lord and drift away and they become desperate and cry out to God and they are back to being blessed. Whenever they forgot how much they needed God, they found themselves on their own until they could not stand it anymore. These things were written so that we could learn a better way! If we do not, then we will find ourselves in desperate situations completely unprepared.

Try this picture. We are entering the final week of regular season football with the play offs and the Super Bowl being the ultimate goal. Did you know that these teams practice for the desperate moments when they must score or else? The do not come to those critical moments and then just drum up a play on chalk board. They have practiced these plays and practiced these plays for that special time. They have practiced for when they are desperate so much that when the time comes they have confidence that they can make it happen.

Some players are so well known for overcoming desperate times that other teams dread them even having the opportunity to make it happen. In fact those players have such confidence that it gets into the heads of the opponents and it almost looks like they let it happen. They know it is coming but they cannot stop it. Football players and plays can fail, but God cannot!

We must understand that when we maintain our desperation for God, we put the devil on his heels. He knows we will win because we are one with Christ. When we are aware of our desperate need for God, it is like seeing the table spread before us with the weapon we need for victory highlighted with a “guaranteed to work” caption over it. He is the air we breathe!

God promises that those who wait upon Him will not be disappointed. Waiting is like practicing desperation plays. Seeking builds confidence so that when the situation looks desperate, we can confidently huddle with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and come out with the winning play. Don’t wait until you are desperate to desperately seek the Lord. Make it your daily practice to re-desperate! Thank Him. Praise Him. Trust Him. He will bring it to pass.
