REFUSING TO OBEY
So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow. (Romans 13:2 NLT)
I would be the first to agree that we have some laws that fall short of the glory of God, but still this is the word of God. We may try to rationalize and say that this was written a long time ago, but if we are people who really believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, then we believe that His word transcends time. We also need to acknowledge that there were worse laws then than the laws we have today. God even had instructions to slaves and told them to serve like free men. So what happens if we just take this for what it is and consider what God was telling us?
He said that if we refused to obey the laws of the land, it was the same as refusing to obey God. Now no Christian ever wants too intentionally disobey God. We may resist, rationalize, run and try to hide, but we don’t normally say, “I don’t care what God says.”
So what should we do when we don’t like what the law has to say? Well, God says we should pray about everything, so that is a good start. It may be that the reason we have some laws that do not express Godly principles is because Christians did not pray. It may also be that some of them came about to reveal the darkness in the heart of man. For whatever reason laws like abortion, school prayer, and others are on the books. It is up to us to overcome evil with good.
Fortunately the law does not demand that all women have abortions. It would best if it were not legal, but unless hearts are changed, some people would still have abortions. It is no more right for someone to blow up a clinic than it is for people to have abortions. Both acts are taking lives. Those laws are extreme laws and we all know to pray about those. But what about speed limits, seat belts, taxes, and other laws that we think are not that big of deal? This scripture says that if we do not obey the laws of the land it is the same as refusing to obey God and punishment will follow. So again, we are challenged to count the cost. We know that there is a blessing in obedience and curse in disobedience. What price are we willing to pay in order to have our own way.
When it comes right down to it, there are a whole lot of things that we may not agree with. Let’s face it; we have a hard time even agreeing on what we will agree on in the body of Christ. So it is no wonder we want to try and make our own laws otherwise as well. Perhaps this is why God tells us to just obey the laws of the land. We obviously do not understand some of the things that God does, but His word says that He put the government there. Our assignment is to pray for all in authority. That of course is another thing we resist at times. You know it is easy to believe that God knows what He is doing when everything goes the way we want it to. It takes faith to believe it when it is not the way we want it. The just will live by faith, so I guess we better just obey and pray. If we do, God says He will hear us and heal our land.
