REMAINING FAITHFUL
You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. (John 8:31 NLT)
Isn’t it funny how we faithfully do things that really do not like to do? As children most of us started out wanting to go to school, but over time that wore off and we went because we had to. Even if we liked it, there were days we would rather not have gone. I can remember riding my tricycle trying to follow my older brother but was forced to come back and wait a couple years just to start. Once I started, the only way to advance and finally graduate was to show up and do the work.
Some people are faithful to jobs only because they want the pay check. In that instance, they are probably just showing up and not really being faithful to their work. We probably all have things that we do well enough to get by. For instance, I mow a lot of grass in the summer, but I am not always that into it if you know what I mean. On the other hand, when the sun is out I do my best to be very faithful to get on the God Wing and ride!
The truth is we are the most faithful to the things we enjoy and the people we like. Relationships end when people choose not to be faithful. Jobs end when people are not faithful. Students fail when they are not faithful. When people cease to be faithful life gets very dark. This is why the devil works so hard to keep people from the light of Jesus’ teachings.
The words of Jesus are the foundation of faithfulness. He went on to tell them that if they remained faithful to His teachings, then they would know the truth and the truth would make them free. All that is necessary is for us to choose to remain faithful.
In order to be successful at anything or in anything a person must be faithful. However without a good foundation, faithfulness is always on the verge of falling off the edge. People often try to blame peer pressure and there is no doubt that peer pressure does play a role, but in the end we are the ones that make the choices and must accept the responsibility.
So if we have even a little understanding, we can agree that what Jesus taught and continues to teach truly are the words of life. Since we know these things, why are we so easily influenced into thinking that faithfulness is a matter of perspective or convenience? We often treat faithfulness to God and His teachings like a speed limit; we follow it carefully when the law is present! We are faithful to God when we have time. We understand that God knows how busy we are and there are other important things that we must do. What! What could be more important than faithfulness to Him?
The truth is, even when we are in church we can be guilty of not being faithful to Him because we are thinking of other things that we must do or places we must be. As a pastor I am focused when it comes to church, but I have to be honest and say that there are lots of areas where I can improve on remaining faithful to His teachings. Faithfulness is what Jesus is looking for.
