REST/RESTING/RESTED
God's promise of entering His place of rest still stands. (Hebrews 4:1a NLT)
Have you ever noticed how much better you function when you are rested? Have you ever noticed how good it feels to sit down and rest? Have you ever had someone ask you to do something and you told them you would as soon as you were done resting? I think we can all answer yes to each of these questions, so it stands to reason that God’s place of rest is a good thing. It is in fact such a good thing that we are told we should tremble with fear that some of us might fail to get there.
God offers us rest from struggles and fears. He tells us to cast everything on Him because He cares for us. When we are struggling and then put the burden over to him, it is like sitting down to rest. It feels so good. If we never rest, we will wear ourselves out. The same is true in our spiritual life. Someone recently asked me how we are supposed to use all the weapons that God has given us. That is a very good question. It has been my experience that I can wear myself out trying to make something work, that actually works very naturally when I simply rest in the Lord.
One of the things the enemy tries to do if he can’t keep us out of the kingdom is try to wear us out by getting us to do everything in our own strength. The Bible says that we are fully equipped to do everything in Christ Jesus. In other words, we are fully equipped to work together with God through Christ. His equipment. His power. His everything. We are partners together with Him in life.
So the more we rest in Him, the more rested we are. The more rested we are, the more all the gifts and fruits of the Spirit flow freely in our lives. The sooner we learn that the greatest thing we can do is rest in the Lord, the sooner we will defend our times of resting.
I can’t tell you how many times I have had someone ask me what I have been doing and my response was, “not much,” when the truth was I was probably doing the most important thing I could do. I have finally decided that it is okay to just tell people I have been spending time with or resting in the Lord. After all, it does make every other part of our lives more productive.
No wonder there is so much resistance to just sitting down and spending time with God. How often have you started to rest in God, only to find yourself feeling like you really needed to get something done. What makes us think that the only time we can rest in God is late at night or early in the morning? Of course at those times we really feel like we should be sleeping. I think we should take advantage of every opportunity to just rest in Him. No matter what we are doing, if we can learn to yoke up with Him, we will find His equipment, power, and gifts flowing productively. And all we have to do is act naturally. Rested in Him.
