ROOM IN YOUR HEART
Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham. And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there's no room in your hearts for my message. (John 8:37 NLT)
Recently someone requested a bare bones message or way to most easily share the gospel with someone and get them saved. This made me think. Thinking is a good thing. The problem with trying to answer that is that there are as many different perfect ways to help someone as there are people who need help! The key I believe is in this truth that Jesus declared in the above verse. It ultimately boils down to whether there is room in the person’s heart or not.
Lots of different things about life make a way for there to be room in a person’s heart. I think that is why Paul spoke of some planting, some watering, and some harvesting. We of course need to remember that there is some plowing that goes on in people’s lives as well.
We must have room in our hearts and a desire for Jesus to move on other people’s hearts. Lots of people have prayed a prayer because they were convicted of their sins, and never went beyond the prayer. So was there room in their heart or did they just get a little guilt relief. Only the Lord knows about that, but our part must be to have enough Jesus in our heart to flow into those who have room in their hearts.
When I combine this verse with the story of the woman at the well, I see the perfect method for every person like that woman who had room in heart but there some walls that needed tending too first.
At the end of the encounter with Jesus we can see that she had been considering God a great deal, because her big question was about worship. We can also see why she did not see a Jew as a good source for the answer to that question. She knew what they all thought about her and about who could worship God and where they could worship God.
Look at it this way. Having the Jew speak to you; not much value. The offer of a gift; no big deal, but intriguing! Living water; confusing, but worth checking into a little further. Having someone who knows everything about you and they are still talking to you; strange, but getting better. Finding out that it is better than you ever imagined that you can worship God and have eternal life; priceless.
This woman had the room in heart and Jesus had exactly what she needed. The Holy Spirit guided Him perfectly, and He will guide us perfectly as well. So it is not so much in finding the perfect formula because there is not one! The key is in being loaded up on the Way, the Truth, and the Life and then just overflowing into the hearts that have room.
Each little piece of the truth that finds its’ way into a heart will elbow a space for more. Sometimes we are the ones to plow. Sometimes we get to plant on soil that is ready. Sometimes we just water a plant that is there, and sometimes we harvest. It is all about the heart room.
