ROUGH ROADS

So I tell you, live the way the Spirit leads you. (Galatians 5:16a ERV)

Living the way the Spirit of God leads is not always the easy road, but it is always the best and highest road. This is the confidence that we must have if we are going to enjoy the best that God has for us. He is always right!

My bride and I were recently enjoying some great time on the motor cycle riding through the Black Hills of South Dakota. We found a new route that we thought we should try so off we went. We were only a short way down the road when we came to a stop to wait for a guide car. It took a while, but when we finally got the flag man’s attention he informed us that it was only a four mile stretch and a twenty minute wait. Well, that was true, but it was not the whole story! Ultimately, it turned out to be a very challenging drive especially on a motorcycle with two people aboard. It certainly caused us to pray!

So here is part of what I have found spiritually from this experience. Just as a pilot car does not guarantee a smooth road, following God is not always as smooth as we might like. As we followed the pilot car, we came to places where they were watering the road which not only could get the bike dirty, but also made it slick. The scenery was really nice, but I really had little time to look at it. My bride enjoyed it when she did not have her eyes closed! The four mile stretch of construction turned out to be the first four of about twenty or more miles. Did I mention that there was a sign that said something about Hells Canyon! I do not think it compared to hell at all, but it was not always enjoyable.

So we got through the first section and thought it was over. This same thing happens in our walk with God. We go through something and think that must be it and when it isn’t; when something else comes up; well what do we do? We dare not give up.

I can tell you that later sections of construction made the first four miles seem wonderful. One of the things that made me assume it was not bad was the fact that I saw bikes coming from the other direction so it must be ok ahead. In our walk with God, it can appear at times that people walking the other way seem to have it easy. We are distracted and tempted to turn around, but we must continue to be led by the Spirit.

There was a section that the guide car led us through that made me wonder if the guide car was paying attention, but we did make it. The same can be true following the Spirit, we may think He has forgotten where we are, but He knows where He is going.

At last, we came to two way traffic with no guide car which makes a person think we are finally into easier territory. This was not the case. In fact, the last mile was the worst I have ever been on and the last hundred feet of that last mile had moments where I was not sure we would make it in an upright position. Praise God, we did! When it was over, all we could talk about was how great a drive that will be when the construction is done. I also found I could drive on impossible roads and that my companion was a great passenger. She did her part to keep us upright. Two of us together traveled the rough road and looking back, it was not so bad. We never lost track of the fact that God was with us. There is much more that I know God has to show me in this. Stay tuned. Listen to the message on line if you get time. Keep following the Spirits leading!
