RUMORS

What dainty morsels rumors are--but they sink deep into one's heart. (Proverbs 18:8 NLT)

Have you ever noticed how open we can be to rumors? A person says, “Guess what I heard,” and it draws us like a magnet. Even if we say we prefer not to hear, we find ourselves thinking about it. It is like we think we will miss something if we don’t get the rest of the story. On the news they are always talking about an anonymous source of information and everyone wants to know who it is. The bottom line is that rumors are in fact dainty morsels and they sink deep into our hearts whether they are true or not. We may be adamantly in favor of the rumor or against it, but either way it becomes a source of stimulation and agitation. Rumors can flat keep us awake at night!

If you want to talk about a disruption in the harmony of life, rumors can do it about as well as anything. Rumors will affect how you think about people and how you treat them. Have you ever experienced a change in how someone treated or talked to you, and then found out that it was because they heard you said or did such and such?

Yes there is no doubt that rumors disrupt our lives, and whether our initial reaction is good or bad, the whole thing is still based only on rumor. If we want to be safe from the infections that rumors can cause, the best place to run is to our Lord who is our strong tower. He is our safe place.

Have you ever considered who is the biggest gossip/rumor spreader of all time? Remember Eve in the garden. Yes the father of all lies and rumors is the old serpent himself, the devil. He was whispering a rumor in Eve’s ear and she fell for it hook, line, and sinker. He has not changed his way of operating one little bit.

Let’s face it, we all hear rumors daily, we just may not have realized it. When you are driving down the street and you wave at someone who should wave back, but they don’t, the devil whispers that they are mad at you or stuck up or something else that is only a rumor. He will never tell you that they just did not see you. His rumors are all destructive. If we are wise we will just let the Lord be our strong tower and quench that rumor.

It would be nice if the enemy only meddled in such things as driving down the street, but the truth is he is always trying to disrupt our harmony. He especially likes to mess with families. You did know that he likes to see families destroyed didn’t you? He loves to tell us what someone is thinking, especially if they aren’t thinking that at all. He loves to convince us that something said in passing was actually said after much deep and malicious planning. He will try anything. Let’s say that I ask my wife to go for walk because I simply want to spend the time together, but the enemy comes and says, “He thinks you are gaining weight!” Now if my wife laughs at that we can have nice laugh together on our walk. If on the other hand she allows that morsel to go down deep, we may go for a walk, but it probably would take some time for it to become pleasant.

We should not be so easily convinced that rumors are true. We should run to the Lord who is our strong tower. He will keep us safe from harmful rumors and from being disappointed when a good rumor turns out different from what we hoped.
