SET ASIDE

This is the stone which was set at naught of you builders...the chief corner. (Acts 4:11)

Have you ever set the Name of Jesus aside? Of course you have! I am certain we all have. When we doubt. When we fear. When we speak without hope or faith. We are setting His name aside. We are declaring that His name is nothing. We are saying that we really do not believe what He has promised.

I know this sounds a little far fetched, but then the Word of God is pretty far fetched to our natural thinking. As I read this scripture, God said to me, “Do not set the Name aside.” Recently I was praising Him for something that He had done. I was making a pretty big deal of it, because it was a pretty big deal. He said, “I was just faithful to my word, why are you surprised?” I apologized and then thought about what He said. Of course He was right. I really should not be surprised when God keeps His promises!

Have you ever been in that spot? You know, the place where you prayed and God answered and you were surprised that He did. We should always be amazed and impressed and very grateful for all that God does, but we should not be surprised when He keeps His promises. That is sort of like asking someone to take you somewhere and then when they show up you tell them that you did not think they would really pick you up.

God does not lie! I realize that this sounds like nit picking with words, but we really do need to be careful that we do not set the Name of Jesus aside. We need to be careful that we don’t predetermine what things God can or will do and what He can’t or will not do. There is nothing He cannot do. Oh, He cannot lie!

I think we are all guilty of categorizing what role God should play in our lives. Some folks involve Him in lots of things as long as they are big enough for God. Others only involve Him in little things, like a prayer before a meal, or at bedtime. Others only call on Him when it is out of any other realm of possibility. They think, when every other avenue has been exhausted maybe God can do something. And some set Him aside completely.

Since God is without limit, and since He has declared that He is interested in all things pertaining to life, why don’t we just put Him first and not set Him aside. We are the one’s who need to step aside and let Him do His thing. If we had a flat tire, it would be silly of my daughters to step in front of me to change it! I might watch them a while but ultimately I would have to suggest they move and let me handle it. I think God spends a whole lot of time watching us, waiting for us to put the one with the most strength and ability first. I am asking the Lord to show me when I set Him aside. Won’t you join me in getting Him more involved in every part of our lives?
