SHARING IN HIS SPIRIT
Think about what we have in Christ: the encouragement He has brought us, the comfort of His love, our sharing in His Spirit, and the mercy and kindness He has shown us (Phil. 2:1 ERV)
We all like to be encouraged. We all like to be comforted. And, we all like to be loved. We may not always acknowledge it but it is true. The fact is, we need these things. We also need mercy and kindness and there is no mercy or kindness like the mercy and kindness the Lord continues to show us. All of these things are things we can relate to, but the one thing we probably neglect the most and understand the least is the role that the Holy Spirit plays in all of these and what our part is in His involvement in every aspect of our lives.
Note, that this version of the Bible tells us that we share in His Spirit. Other versions say the same thing only they pose the question saying if there is any sharing or fellowship with the Spirit. Well, we know that there is fellowship with the Spirit because we know that He leads us into all truth. We also know that the Spirit is the one who draws us to the Father through Jesus Christ. The truth is He is involved in everything having to do with God and our relationship with Him.
We will not recognize where the encouragement, comfort or love of God is without the Spirit. In the same way, it is the Spirit that makes us aware of our need of God’s mercy and kindness.
The Holy Spirit is constant in His performance. The fulfillment of the contract is dependent upon us sharing in His ways. In a sense it is our receiving our share from Him and using it to work with Him. Remember it is God working in us helping us want to do what pleases Him and giving us the power to do it. This is the Holy Spirit offering us what is best for us and if we will receive it and in turn share it the cycle is set in motion.
Sharing in His Spirit means sharing in the fruit of the Spirit. It means sharing in the power, the gifts, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Just as it is not enough to simply acknowledge the existence of God, so it is not enough to simply give a head nod to the fact that the Holy Spirit is in the Bible. God requires a relationship through Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.
If we receive from the Holy Spirit, we are sharing with God. Because of the presence of the Holy Spirit we receive power to share and to do our share. It is not something we do in order to have a relationship; it is something we do because we have a relationship.
The Holy Spirit is the mortar that secures the faith built on the Rock of Jesus Christ. Without Him involved, everything is shaky and in danger of crumbling at the first tremor. The Holy Spirit is, and we must believe that He is, and that He does all that God sent Him to do. When we believe this, we will want nothing more that to share in Him.
