SHEEP OF HIS HAND
For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. (Psalm 95:7KJV)
As we look forward to a new year, I think it would be good if we consider who will be in charge of our future. Who will be God in our lives? The psalmist states that He is our God. Who is He? He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is not a generic God. He is one, and He is the One True God.
If we choose to be His, then we are the people of His pasture. Nowhere will you find greener pastures than you do when you are in His care. He is our shepherd and we are the sheep of His hand. Nowhere will you find better care than when you place yourself in His hands.
Think about how a shepherd takes care of His sheep. David grasped this because he was a shepherd. He knew how good of care he took of his sheep. So perhaps, one day as David watched his sheep and talked with the Lord he asked the Lord how he could be sure that God would take care of everything. Then before God could answer, David saw a lion go after one of his lambs. With no thought for his own life David took off and killed that lion before it could hurt one of his sheep. When David came back, perhaps God told David to look at what he had just done. Suddenly the light came on for David and He understood that the Lord was His shepherd, and in the same way that he would do anything for his sheep, so God would take care of him.
It was with this understanding that David could assure Saul that Goliath would be no problem. David knew that just as sure as he protected his sheep from lions and bears and anything else that came along, God would make sure that Goliath went down.
David also knew that it was his responsibility to make sure that the sheep were fed well and that they had good water. He did his very best to take care of every need that the sheep had. Knowing that, David could say by faith that he already had everything he needed.
You see, while the sheep were eating in one spot, David was already planning for the next spot. When the sheep were beside still waters in one spot, David was planning for the next oasis. His eye was always on his flock, because he prided himself as being a good shepherd. He even played music to sooth them and at the same time he worshipped God.
David knew that God’s rod and staff were way better than his. He also knew that God had an unlimited source of supply. He knew that even when the enemy showed his face, the Lord had victory spread out before Him. Just as David kept his sheep in the best possible condition, He knew that God would anoint him and overflow his cup of blessing.
Perhaps you have never allowed the Lord to show His shepherd skills to you. You may love Him sincerely, but just never grasped how seriously He takes His responsibility for your care, protection and provision. I know I have done that very thing. We miss so much when we lose sight of this. God help us all to keep our eyes on the Great Shepherd and allow Him to do all that He has promised. What year of overflow it will be when we do this.
