SHINE ON
The light shines through the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it.(John 1:5NLT)
Isn’t it good to know that this is not just some theory? It is not just some idea that a man came up with. It is a fact that Life is in Christ, and that His life is light for everyone. The fact that the light still shines is proof of that.
For two thousand years the devil has been trying to put that light out. Actually he has been trying for longer than that. Satan tried to keep the light from even coming into the world, but his darkness never was and never will be any match for the Light of Jesus Christ.
Every theory, religion, or force that has tried to put out this light has been proven wrong and will one day be swallowed up completely by the Light of Truth. It makes no difference if people prefer to believe lies and to walk in darkness. The light just keeps shining. Nothing can stop it!
So then, knowing and believing that this is true, what are we to do? We are to just keep shining. It makes no difference how bright or how dark of place we are in, we just keep shining. We need not be concerned about our battery running down, for we are powered by the source of all power. And as long as the truth is in us, we have light. And that light will give life, as long as we don’t put it under a basket.
Jesus chose us to go and shine. He did not say be a light. He said you are light. There is a difference. The devil is the one that confuses us. He tries to tell us that we have to perform in order to be light, but Jesus said that we already are. “Then why don’t I feel like it.?” “Why do I feel like such a failure?” Does that sound familiar?
I think this is part of entering into His rest. Relax, in other words. No one can perform well enough to feel like they have performed well enough. There will always be another level of performance that we feel like we have to rise up to. This is what burns people out and causes them to give up. Jesus never called us to perform, He called us to be. Remember that! Your actions then come as a result of who you are.
Rather, think of yourself as a flash light. It simply shines because it has a bulb and a power source. The bulb burns in direct proportion to power that is in its battery. Your power source is the Lord Jesus Christ. He never loses His power. When it is very, very dark, the light may seem not to penetrate very far in the darkness, but it can still be seen from a long distance. In the same sense, you may feel like you are being swallowed by the darkness, but the fact is you are the point of light. Anyone looking for light will be able to find you.
Then, there are the times when you are around other bright lights, and you begin to feel like yours is not as bright nor is it very significant. You may feel like no one could even notice your little light. Don’t let the devil discourage you. Every light is important. In fact, yours is probably the one shining brightest in someone’s eyes.
So don’t get caught up in how to shine or where to shine. Just know that the life of Christ is light and it is shining through those who love Him. Then shine on.
