But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?" (Mark 4:40)
They asked Jesus if he cared whether they perished or not. Actually, they accused Him of not caring! In response to their panic, He stood and showed just how much He did care; He rebuked the storm. If we expect any part of our walk of faith in Jesus Christ to work, we better believe that He cares. If we don’t even know how to turn on the computer we will never be able to use it. If we do not believe that Jesus cares about every part of our lives we are never going to stay afloat.
Throughout Jesus’ time of earthly ministry, He cared. He loved. He taught. He wept. He revealed the kingdom of God and still they accused Him of not caring. His response to them was to ask how they could be afraid with Him in the boat. After all, these guys were fishermen. They had been in storms before they ever met Jesus. Now, it was going to be His fault if they perished. How often do people blame God in or for their circumstances? Well, we can get over that, because quite simply it is not His fault.
Wouldn’t it have been a nicer story if the storm arose and they simply nudged Jesus and asked Him what the plan was? I have heard others say and may well have thought or said it myself, that Jesus was upset because they should have rebuked the waves themselves. Well that could be, but they had never even heard of such a thing before, so I just don’t see Jesus getting very upset about that. I think I will just stick with the fact that He wanted them to trust Him. After all they had been through, it would be reasonable for Jesus to expect them to believe He cared.
Hey, let’s face it, we all say and think things that should not even be thought, let alone said, but we can get over that! We can stop doubting. We can trust in His great love. We can expect Him to calm storms. We can expect Him to save, heal, deliver, provide, protect, and direct. We can do all of this if we believe that He cares.
Think about it. What will you do for people that you care about? How do you feel if they accuse you of not caring? Have you ever told someone, “Don’t blame me?” No one likes the blame game! Jesus was blamed lots of times. Mary and Martha both blamed Him for not being there for their brother. Jesus wept over their refusal to trust Him! He was getting ready to raise the dead. Something great was about to happen. Wouldn’t it have been great if they would have run to Him and asked Him to raise Lazarus from the dead because they knew He cared and because nothing was impossible for Him.
This chapter of Mark spends a great deal of time teaching about seeds and soil. The seeds are all the same, the soil is what makes the difference. So what kind of soil are we. Will we produce or will we just let the seed be stolen, the plant wither, or be choked out. A great treatment to prepare our soil would be to focus on how much Jesus cares and let our trust grow from that. It will kill weeds of doubt and fear and give us confidence to taste, trust, and see that the Lord is good. Even the greatest miracles can fade from memories, but His care is consistent!
