SIN NO MORE

"No Lord," she said. And Jesus said, "Neither do I. Go and sin no more." (John 8:11)

I know this sounds like a strange topic for devotion on Mother’s Day, but it is what it is. So let’s begin by remembering to honor our mothers. Remember, every woman is a mother in one way or another. It is one of those amazing things that God put in women. Little girls mother their dollies and long for younger siblings to practice on. Grown women mother their husbands! It is a precious gift and at the same time a painful gift. Not only are mothers forgiving to fault sometimes, they are also often the most condemned and blamed by the very objects of their mothering!

If we have problems in this area we must fix them. It is a sin if we don’t. So whether it is a new or old problem, fix it. You do not need to fix them, you need to fix you. If we do not do this, we miss the promise that comes with honoring our mothers. Don’t say you cannot or you will not forgive; instead, thank God for them. Hey even if we have no big riff with our mothers we can all give them more love and honor!

With that said, let’s look at this woman who Jesus told to sin no more. What put her in this position of being caught in adultery? Was she a widow trying to support her children? Was she forced into it by a husband who was pressured by the Pharisees? Was she pressured by a Pharisee and threatened to do this or else? Why would they prefer to stone this woman than to forgive her? Well, we just do not know the answers to these questions. We do know what Jesus said! He told her He did not condemn her and to stop sinning.

You see, we all know we should not sin, but we tend to brush off the idea of not sinning with the idea that it is not possible, that everyone does it, and that Jesus knows our hearts and will forgive us. But what if we decided that it was in fact, possible or at least that we are willing to try? What would we gain if we were to set our hearts to achieve what Jesus told this woman to do? He was really telling us to do the same thing!

What if we actually brought our very thoughts words captive and refused to sin? What if we decided to fight the good fight of faith? What if we refused to not love? What would that change in our lives? Well I can tell you that you need to be ready to do battle, because you will suddenly find yourself well aware of how far you actually have to go in this quest. You will experience victory after victory over things that you never saw before. Of course you will also find yourself repenting often for failures, fighting condemnation like crazy, and having everything and everyone who can cause you to fail come out of the woodwork with new things to conquer!

You will realize that truly you are a person that only Jesus and a mother could love. Smile. It is ok. What is not ok is to just brush this off and imagine that you don’t have any big sins and that you are doing ok. Neither is it ok to brush this off and say, “I am too far gone, no sense in trying.” Jesus does not condemn us; He calls us to forgiveness and rewards us with abundant life. Isn’t that just like a mother?
