SMALL BEGINNINGS
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin. (Zech. 4:10)
It is amazing how easily we forget that most everything starts small. The world was created with a word, but how long did God plan before He began? And remember, we all started from the joining of two things that only a microscope can detect and yet life began instantaneously. Even when we are born, though all babies seem large to the one who gives them birth, we were small in proportion to what we become. Even a lottery jackpot starts small and grows! The bottom line is that all things have a beginning.
In this passage of scripture, God is making some promises about how the temple will be rebuilt. He reminds them in verse 6 that it is not by might, nor power, but by His Spirit that all will be completed. He says that nothing will stand in the way of Zerubbabel finishing the project. He promised them this to help them overcome the hopelessness of completing what looked like an impossible task. God said it was not only possible, but promised that the same one who laid the first stone would lay the last.
There are times in our lives when the even the beginning seems non-existent. We start to dream but it just seems out of reach. We need to remember that if God placed the seed, then that is a beginning and we should not be discouraged or despise the small things. After all, God rejoices to see the work begin. We are sure to enjoy the completion!
Have you ever considered that your salvation through the blood of Jesus was a small beginning? It was a giant step, but still a small beginning. It was an entrance into a kingdom that has no end and into a relationship that makes all things possible. Still many people experience very little of what God intended and some give up the whole thing. But wise people seek God and refuse to let anything keep them from laying the final stone.
Even a person who is blessed to start with a lot, is really only beginning to do or be what God has planned for them. Someone who does not have much might say that if they could just start with a million dollars, lots of land, or a successful business, they could do well too. The truth is, if they don’t do it right, no matter how much they start with they can end up with nothing. Wherever we start, it is only a beginning.
The real key to all things is not what we have, but who has us. God can turn the smallest seed into the largest tree. If we will trust Him, we too will learn to delight just to see the beginning. If we despise where we are, our focus will be on what we do not have rather that what we could have. As a result we will often end up with far less than God’s best. Zerubbabel could have just dropped the first stone and walked away, but He never would have seen what God had promised. Big things start small! Enjoy the journey!
