Isn’t it interesting that we really do want things to be simple, but we have a hard time believing that they can be that simple. In this day and age, there are a multitude of offers that come in the mail, by phone, or via the Internet promising ways to get rich quick. There are a lot of people who are willing to try them even if deep down they doubt that it could work because it just can’t be that simple. Every now and then there is an offer that just might work for a person but they never try it and they miss the opportunity of a lifetime. Sometimes we just need to be willing to try something different.

Jesus was telling His disciples about a new way of doing things. He told them about some wonderful things that were coming. He made them some wonderful promises. Then He told them that in order to have all He was promising that they would need to do something they had never done before. He told them they would have to ask God directly just the way that they had watched Jesus do. Up to this point, they were used to Jesus getting whatever they needed by asking the Father. Now Jesus was promising them that everything would continue on without Him just fine as long as they asked God for themselves.

Can’t you just imagine them sitting around saying, “Oh sure that is easy for Him to say. We can’t do that. There is no way it could be that simple.” Of course to His face they agreed that it would be no problem. Well, when He was gone it was quite a problem. They all started out by running and hiding. But then the Holy Spirit came just like Jesus said He would and they were filled with boldness and began to go directly to God in Jesus name. They went boldly because of His blood and things went just the way that Jesus said they would.

The promise Jesus made was not only to them, but also to all who would believe because of them. We all know that includes us. The problem is we have a hard time grasping just how good God is and just how much He desires to make all His promises come true in our lives. The Bible tells us that God never changes. He was good from the beginning and He gets gooder with each step we take closer to Him. That is bad grammar but it is a wonderful truth, and believe me there are a lot steps to be taken between Him and us.

Just think how good it was when you came to know Jesus. Now think of how much better it is since you’ve come to know Him more. As you have drawn closer to Him and come to know Him more you experience more of His goodness. The disciples traveled with Him and were convinced that He was the Messiah, but still they never knew Him when they were walking with Him like they knew Him after He was in them.

With God there is always something different. It was different to ask Jesus into your heart. It is different to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It is different to know His healing touch. And it is different to plead the Blood of Jesus. Don’t miss any opportunity with God just because it seems different. Keep growing in the grace and the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
