STARTING HOME
Then Jesus told him, "Go back home. Your son will live!" And the man believed Jesus' word and started home. (John 4:50 NLT)
This time of year there is a lot of talk about home. “Are you going home for Christmas? Or, when I was home we did this for Christmas. Or I wish I could go home. Or I wish I had a home.” Home is a word that takes on a lot of different meanings to people, and brings up a lot of different memories. All of that said; the home that we should all look for is the one that Jesus promised to prepare for us and when it was ready to come and take us there.
As we prepare to celebrate the life of Jesus, we are well aware of the road that ultimately took Him home. It is also a good time to consider the route we are taking. In this particular passage of scripture we see a government official whose son is dying asking Jesus to come and heal the child. Jesus simply tells him to go home and assures him that his son will live. At this the man believes Jesus and heads home.
Think about the joy that the man had as Jesus made that promise. It is much like it is for us when we first believe that we can have life through Christ, and we start that journey home. I wonder how long it was before a traveling companion started to cast doubt on the whole thing. I wonder if someone might have said, “is that it? Are you just going to go on His word? I would make Him come with me if I were you. What if your son is dead when you get home?” How long before the enemy came whispering telling him he was crazy to listen to Jesus. Just because others have been healed doesn’t mean your son will be healed. This was a crazy idea in the first place; you should have just stayed home.
Still the man trudged on toward home, hoping that what he first believed was true. What did he think when he first saw his servants coming? Did he expect good or bad news? What kind of news do you usually expect? Once this man got the news he checked out the timing and realized that at the very moment Jesus said it, the boy was healed. As a result the official and his entire household believed in Jesus.
The most important thing for us to ask ourselves is, “are we headed home?” If we are, then we need to be prepared to spend some time walking by faith without seeing the final results. We need to hold on to the things we believe in spite of what things the enemy may throw at us in order to get us to doubt. If we will just keep walking we will see the glory of God, even when things do not come out the way we plan. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus let us be reminded that His birth was the beginning of the race that all of us have before us. God’s promises to Jesus were all true and all of Jesus promises to us are true. If we can believe, all things are possible to them that believe.
As we, like the official, continue in faith, we will see the Lord confirm His word and as a result many others will believe. If you have started home, keep pressing. If have yet to start home, today is the day. Don’t harden your heart, start the journey. If you have stopped somewhere along the way and given up, allow the Lord to renew your hope.
