STAY

Then Jesus turned to the twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?” (John 6:67 NLT)

In the morning when I give Mia, our dog, her treat, I say sit and stay. Oh how she wants that treat, but she waits because she wants it. The cat is a whole other story! They know the routine and they hold me to it. It is very possible that I am the one who is trained, but I don’t mind.

I was thinking in the night of the importance of staying with God. In order to stay, we really must have a desire to do so. Our desire must be for God and His presence not just for what He can give us. Before I knew Him I would ask Him for help if I was desperate, but I had no intention of staying with Him.

It is God’s desire that we stay with Him. He gives us His undivided attention and He really desires the same from us. We know He stays with us, the variable is in us. Do we desire Him enough to stay? We need to be more than drop in friends with the Lord. We don’t want Him to be our drop in on occasion God do we?

We want Him to always have our best interests in mind. We want His health and provision, His protection and His direction if it fits what we want; we want the best He has and we want Him to be satisfied with what we offer?

Jesus said that the key to life was that we abide in Him and that His word abides in us. It cannot be a relationship based on what we do or what He does. He does not leave us when we do not perform perfectly and we cannot leave Him when things do not go our way.

His thoughts are above our thoughts. He knows more than we do. Do we know that? Do we trust that?

When most of us come to the Lord, we do not come with great understanding. We come because we respond to Holy Spirits drawing. To be honest, I think it is best if we have not analyzed and scrutinized and decided to give it a try. We should come because we want a place to stay.

His word is life and His touch is eternal. It will take eternity to know and understand His ways. I still do not know much in comparison to what there is to know, but I do know that the same thing that drew me is what has kept me for all these years. I just need to know God more. Everything else is temporary. Nothing else can really satisfy me for long. Peter told the Lord that He was life so there was no place else to go. Come to Him with a desire to stay.

There have been times when the Lord has asked me to stay when I was about to get on with my day and I have never told Him no. How could I? Still I can see that there are times when my attitude or actions in life may be saying no to His desires. I will stay at it. I pray you will as well.
