STAY WITH THE WORD

It is not desirable that we should leave the Word of God and serve tables(Acts 6:2NKJ)

Whether or not they were appointing men to serve literal tables in this passage of scripture, I honestly do not know, and I am not sure that anyone does. Some have used this scripture to develop a doctrine for deacons in the church. One that has become much more complicated that it was ever intended if this is the basis for it, I might add. If they were waiters, they certainly were not what we would expect from a waiter! For in deed great miracles were done at their hands. On the other hand, this is probably exactly what God intends for all Christians.

For the purpose of this devotion, I want to focus on the fact that the twelve would not leave the Word of God. This does not mean that the people appointed by them were any less in the Word of God, only that they would not leave what God had called them to do.

Every believer must develop this same determination when it comes to the purpose of God for their lives. There are many good things that may come up, but if they are not best according to God, then they must wait or be left completely.

I can only imagine what must have gone through the minds of the twelve as these complaints came in. I am sure that they even tried to spread themselves thin for a short time in an attempt to please the complainers, but at last they came to the conclusion that they had to do what they were called to do and someone else was going to have to take over that ministry. Of course, they did not just brush it off lightly. They sought out men of good reputation who were full of the Holy Spirit. Then they anointed them a got back to what they were called to do.

How many things come up in our lives that distract us from the Word of God. Some of them are even good things, but are they the best thing. And let’s face it, many of them are just plain distractions that we allow to keep us from what God wants for our lives. We need to be aware of these things and be sure to seek the Lord when situations come up that are going to keep us from God. Whether it be attending church, reading our Bibles, praying, witnessing, or what ever it is that God has us involved in, if something else comes up, let’s make sure it is the Lord and not just a distraction to keep us from the Lord.

No doubt, there were those who did not like the idea the apostles had, but there will always be those who will complain. There were then, and there are now. The question becomes, who do we want to please most? We must remember, that everything else will wither and fade, but it is the Word of God that will go on forever.
