STILL
...after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:12 NKJ)
Recently, the Lord brought to my mind, “Be still and know that I am God.” Since then it continually comes up in my Spirit in a way that it never has before. I am not very good a being still. I start and then I have to restart.
As I have been still, God has extended my thinking to the word still. Still He loves us even though we have not earned it. We may be discouraged but we still keep going. We may not understand, but we are still supposed to pray. Things may not go the way we want, but we must still trust God.
Are you still with me? Such a little word can be so important in our walk with God. This passage of scripture comes at a time when Elijah is discouraged and afraid. Interestingly enough, this all took place right after he had a huge victory over the prophets of Baal. He had prayed and God sent down fire and well, it was a pretty impressive time for Elijah.
But then came the let down. He wilted at the threat of Jezebel and went away wanting to die. An angel came and told him to eat and encouraged him. Then Elijah went into a cave and the Lord came and asked him what he was doing there. Elijah complained a bit and the Lord told him to go out and stand before the Lord.
Then there was wind, an earthquake, and a fire, but the Lord was not in those. At last came the still small voice and the Lord again asked Elijah what he was doing there. Elijah was doing what we all do on occasion; he was feeling sorry for himself.
When we feel sorry for ourselves, rather than being still and receiving from God, we are busy telling God why we are right to feel sorry for ourselves instead of declaring that we are still standing on His promises no matter what.
If you read this passage of scripture you will see that the Lord was not in the strong destructive wind. I believe this is always true when it comes to us. God is often blamed for the things that come against us. God says He is for us, so why would He blow against us; unless of course we are going the wrong way, then He may seem to oppose us. We want our own way!
Sometimes is seems like everything is shaking in our world, but just as with the earthquake, God was not in it. He does not come to destroy. He comes to hold us up so that we are still standing after the shaking. Never give in to the idea that God is out to break you apart. Sometimes if feels like everything is going up in smoke, but just as the Lord was not in the fire, so He is not burning us up. Listen for the still small voice. Be still and know that He is God and you will still be standing when it is all over. Listen. Can you hear Him? Receive His comfort and peace.
