STONE PILLOW
Jacob found a stone pillow and lay down to sleep. (Genesis 28:11b NLT)
This story of Jacob’s encounter with God brings some interesting revelation for those of us who are reading it a few thousand years later. It never ceases to amaze me how God’s word is relevant and revealing no matter when we look at it if we will only seek Him for wisdom.
Have you ever wondered about why Jacob used rock for a pillow? I don’t know about you, but I like my pillows a little softer than that. Then it occurred to me that he could brush off the rock and that would help keep dirt out of his ears. Then I saw a picture for us today. Jesus is the solid rock of our salvation. He has called us to rest in Him. If we lay our heads anywhere else, we can get a lot of dirt in our ears too. There is an unlimited supply of things out there trying to keep us from the truth of God’s word, so it is a good idea to take a lesson from Jacob and make the Rock our pillow.
As Jacob slept on this rock, God gave Him a revelation of Himself and made many promises for Jacob’s future as well as His family. Not only that, but God promised to bless all the families of the earth. That is where we come in! This is the promise that is ours through Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Just as God promised to protect and provide for Jacob and future generations, Jesus has promised the same to us. Once again we are reminded that He calls us to come to Him and He will give us rest. Our pillow needs to be the corner stone. Yes Jesus is “that stone” that so many reject and refuse to build their lives on. There are also many who know about Jesus but refuse to make Him their resting place. Let’s face it, we all look for fluffy pillows from time to time! We want pillows that we can conform to what are most comfortable for us. We will never have true rest unless we stick with the Rock pillow.
There is something really special about realizing that God is in a place. Jacob was amazed. All he did was stop to camp and picked out a pillow. He had no idea that God was going to show up. This is true in most of our lives as well. Some set of circumstances or a certain situation, opens the door for God to reveal Himself. Actually I believe there are many of these opportunities in our journey through life. The key is in finally recognizing it and then doing something about it. Jacob responded to this experience by setting up a monument. It was only fitting that this special pillow be the rock that marked the spot. He called the place the house of God. That is what we become when we take our rest on the Rock. We become a house(temple)of God.
There is much more that God will reveal to us if only we will seek Him. For now, let’s determine to make the Lord our resting place. It will help keep the dirt out of our ears and put us in a place to hear the promises of God. Don’t look for a fluffy pillow; stick with the only one that can give true rest.
