STRENGTH TO YOU

This is what we pray...that God will strengthen you with His own great power, so that you will be patient and not give up when troubles come. Then you will be happy.(Colossians 1:11 ERV)

The question often arises as we seek the Lord, “How do we know what God wants us to do?” This is often a point of discouragement for people because they are not sure exactly what their call is. Personally, I believe that the call is to live for Jesus wherever we are and in whatever we happen to be doing.

I remember when one man told me I was called and I asked how he knew or how I could know. There was also another man that told me the same thing, but when I actually began to do what I felt God was telling me, he turned on me. This resulted in some deep searching to be sure I was doing the right thing. There is everything right about deep searching, but it can be difficult when someone who is supposed be more mature in the Lord blindsides you.

The key to following the Lord is just that; follow Him. Be free to seek and to find and to enjoy the Lord. When we get the idea that we need to know exactly what God has for us far down the road, it often results in a stall and discouragement. Move on!

Think of Paul who went places expecting God to confirm the move; he was more than willing to have the Lord prevent him from going, but if the Lord did not stop him he was on his way. He was so confident in the Lord that even when people told him bad things were coming, that did not stop him. Only the Lord could change his direction.

When something bears witness with your spirit and the Lord confirms it; go with it as along as is biblical of course! In the mean time, the Word of God is full of lifestyle projects and daily living guidance. As we grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord, His presence will be spread.

Beginning with verse 9 the prayer for us is that we will receive wisdom and spiritual understanding which will make us completely sure of what God wants. This in turn will help us to live in a way that brings honor to the Lord and pleases Him. What could be a greater accomplishment in life?

This will produce a life of good works of every kind and in the process we will grow in the knowledge of God. Sometimes people get so busy doing the works of God they lose sight of His presence. This may be the folks who tell Him all the wonderful things they did in His name and He says, “I never knew you.”

Finally, what we really need is for God to strengthen us with His power. This will provide us with everything we need to press through every form of trouble. The biggest thing God wants for all of us is that we do not give up. Then you will be happy and so will He.
