SURPASSING MEASURE
And they yearn for you while they pray for you, because of the surpassing measure of God's grace (His favor and mercy and spiritual blessing which is shown forth) in you. (2Cor. 9:14)
The more I consider the grace of God the more amazed I am. Just like everything else with God there is no end to it. There is just no way to measure it. It is impossible to really comprehend the origin. I will never fully understand the kind of love that supplied the unmerited favor of His grace, although I can glimpse little bits as a father with children, but still His is so far beyond what I really can imagine. I am just happy to accept it. I want to make sure that I don’t abuse or take it for granted.
Now it occurs to me that the greatest way for me to show my appreciation for the unmerited favor is to immerse myself in His special favor and blessing. What could be easier than that? I mean really, who does not want special favor and blessing? Who does not want God to overflow in their life? We all want that. However, in order to have that, we must be willing to remove anything that restricts the flow of that grace.
In this verse, Paul tells the Corinthian’s how the recipients of their offering feel about them. He tells them how they yearn for them and pray for them. These people having heard what they had promised to do and because they believed the offering was coming were so blessed that they poured out their hearts to God asking God to bless them even more. They were amazed that anyone would do such a thing for them and they recognized it as a surpassing measure of God’s grace.
This is what we need to reveal to this world around us. We need to reveal a surpassing measure of the favor of God. We need to be vessels that have confidence in the promises of God. They are so great that we cannot possibly contain them all and yet we are all guilty of acting as if they do not exist. This surpassing measure contains health, protection, provision, deliverance, freedom from fear, and everything else that the very presence of God encompasses.
God spoke to me and told me that if we do not intend to walk in all that God has promised then we should not pretend that we will. If we say we are in Christ then we need to walk like Him. He explained that when we say something we attract attention. We attract God’s attention, and we attract the devil’s attention. If we block God off by not fulfilling our vows, we leave only one door open and that is not a door that we want left unlocked.
God’s unmerited favor gives us a seat in heaven, but it is His special favor and blessing that gives us life now. Without it we are just bouncing around in this life waiting to go to heaven. We bring God no glory, and quite often give others reason to doubt Him. The surpassing measure is ours if we want it.
