SUSTAINED WORSHIP

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord (Colossians 3:23)

What if we could do everything for everyone as though we were doing it for and unto the Lord; what would that be like? Paul was telling servants to serve their masters as though they were serving the Lord. We have only one master, and He is the Lord. He says we can do this. Do we want to?

Once again, I was praying at the Piano and I heard myself singing, “I want to love like you love.” Even now it causes me to pause as I consider what that might entail. I am certain I have said it many times and sang it many times, but for some reason this time is different.

In music, there are many signs to clarify what the composer wants done. There are crescendos which tell us to get louder and sustain symbols instructing us to hold that note until we have permission from the conductor to stop. There are many others, which if I think about them are most certainly applicable to our lives if we listen to God. I don’t believe I have looked at them this way before today. If I have, I forgot.

God gave us music. He loves to be worshipped, and music is a great means of worshipping and shaping our hearts and attitudes. Think about it, when you really enter into worship, you never have a wrong thought, because all your thoughts are on Him.

By the grace of God and the enablement of the Holy Spirit, God intends for us to sustain our worship and carry it out in our lives and through our lives. The biggest problem with that thought is that we tend to focus on how frequently you fall short of that goal. As a result of that kind of focus it is easier to just consider it impossible and forget about it. We settle in the valley of good enough! The problem with that is that there is no real comfort in that valley!

Jesus said that He always did what pleased our Father. His life was a praise unto God. When He stepped aside into His Father’s presence, He was not going somewhere new, He was just going somewhere deeper. We never read about His singing, but I am certain He did worship God that way. His life was a beautiful melody.

I am challenged to sustain my worship. I want to walk out into the world with the same melody in my life as I was led to pray at the piano, on the guitar, or acapella in my car or on the street. You see, the only thing stopping me is me.

I can do all things through Christ if I want to. If I want to, I will. Lord, I am suddenly feeling a little weak. We can read about all that Jesus did. We love the way He did everything. It is the going and doing and being Him in the world that causes a pause. In that pause, we are reminded that all things are possible with God. Sustain that note. Hold it and never let it go!

Holding a note when I started band was impossible, but I was not allowed to give up. I won’t give up on this either. I am going to work on it until I last as long as the director requires. Let’s go deeper!
