TAKE IT BACK

I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.(Job 42:6NLT)

Have you ever said, “I didn’t mean it that way?” Or have you heard someone say, “Take back what you said?” No doubt everyone will say yes to this. We have probably all been on both sides of these statements. Of course in the natural it makes no difference if we say we take it back or not, the damage is done.

God on the other hand, is able to throw things into the sea of forgetfulness. Talk about being privileged, we can go to God and repent and He restores us immediately. This is great for us, but what about other people that we have damaged when we fail to follow the guidance that God gives us. This is one more reason why it is important to watch our words and actions.

I know that no one is perfect. However, we should not use that fact as an excuse to keep heading in a wrong direction. Job was accelerating toward the edge of the cliff. He was responding to circumstances and the people around him instead of to the faithfulness of God. He was accusing God falsely and blaming others for his ranting.

However, once God brought light to the subject, Job came to His senses. Job realized that he was speaking about things he had no knowledge of. He came to a greater realization of just how wonderful God really is. And with that, Job repented. He told God that he took it all back and God was quick to forgive. God not only forgave him, but he restored him to an even greater position.

We can learn much from this. For one thing, we can learn not to speak about things we don’t understand. We should always continue to trust God and exercise our right to remain silent when have no understanding. Don’t let circumstances or what others may say or do cause us stop speaking our faith in God and His Word.

If we do catch ourselves speaking things that do not line up with God’s word, we should be quick to take it back, and repent. We should do as Job did and humble ourselves before God and ask him to forgive us. Yes, for even the smallest breaches of faith we should repent! Don’t you know that in the same way that God watches over His word to perform it, the devil listens for opportunities that open the door to devour us. If we don’t correct what we say and speak the truth, we give the devil a license to steal from us.

So let’s be quick to take back not only what the devil steals from us, but what we give him as well. Take back your doubts, your fears, and lack of trust in what God has promised. And when you have recovered, help someone else with the lessons you learn. It takes time for natural damages to be repaired, but spiritually God makes us even better as soon as we ask. I say better, because we are wiser as a result of what we learned.
