TAKE NO THOUGHT

Therefore I say unto you, "Take no thought for your life..." (Matthew 6:25 KJV)

Have you ever wondered if God agonizes over things? In case you have, the answer is no He does not agonize over things. The word agonize is defined as being in agony, or deeply troubled among other things. Personally I would think God would be troubled all the time! Look at us! Look at the world and all that is going on!

I knew that God told us not worry about anything, and that we are supposed to cast all of our cares on Him so in prayer as I was approaching agonizing over something I just asked Him if He agonized over anything. I suspected that He did not, even though we do give him plenty to deal with. You will be happy to know that he places all those things we see as worth agonizing over right where He places our sins, in the sea of forgetfulness. We cast to Him and He passes on to where they can’t bother anyone. Now don’t go thinking He does not care, because we know He does. He knows worry never does anyone any good and He is not going worry either.

We do know that Jesus was deeply troubled in the garden. He was in agony over the only thing that would ever be worth agonizing over. He was concerned about that time when He would be separated from God as He took on all of our sins. That is something that we should all take very seriously. Anything that comes between God and us is something that we need to reject as soon as we see what it is doing. “Search me oh God,” is a great habit to get into.

Fortunately, we have assurance of our salvation so our agonizing need not go on for long! In fact, no matter what it is that we may begin to agonize over, we should end it very quickly. This scripture says that we should take no thought for our life. It is, after all, the things of this life that we tend to agonize over, while we pay little attention to the things of God. God wants us to reverse that order. He wants to think on His things knowing that it will take our minds off of things that He can handle without any problem.

Some translations tell us not to worry about anything, but the idea of taking no thought took on a new light for me. You see lots of thoughts will come; it is what we do with them that makes the difference. God says, “Don’t take them.” Don’t take advice from the devil. Don’t ponder things that exalt themselves against the truth of what God says. Believe what God says! Always measure things against His truth and take His thoughts.

Remember, He came that we might have life. That is why we need not take any thought about it. Now that does not mean that we should quit thinking! Christians are not supposed to become mindless and wandering around in la la land! We also are not supposed to be all caught up worrying or agonizing over things that God has under control. Wouldn’t you think it silly if your children spent all day worrying if you would them? You would tell them not to even think about that, right? So, what are you going to do with those thoughts about your life now?
